Try a lower resolution and run it in a window.

I never heard that windowed mode runs a game faster but I'll try! Can't run lower than 1280x800 though cos that's the lowest 16:10 option in the settings.

If a low resolution game is stretched to fit a larger monitor then it will look ugly. If you run it in a window it isn't stretched and looks fine. Windowed mode make low resolutions more appealing.

You mean when the window mode is displayed 1:1 and not fit-to-screen? I agree, but it looks awkward with the windows desktop in the background. :/
