Forums - Sony Discussion - IGN UK reviews MAG (7.6/10)

CheatCodeCentral

The bottom-line is that MAG is a game that requires a pretty serious time-commitment in order to enjoy. You won't get involved with the Shadow War until you've been playing for a while, and most of the individual leveling seems to be designed with hardcore players in mind, possibly taking hundreds of hours to fully level-up. Anyone considering buying MAG needs to decide for themselves which side of the fence they fall on. If you're a hardcore shooter fan looking to invest the next few months of your spare time into a new online opus, then fire away because you're going to love MAG. But if you're a more casual online shooter fan, then you may want to think twice.

Rating Description

4.2

Graphics
The levels of MAG are amazing. They are huge and expansive but also filled with detail and set pieces. Character models also have more detail than we're used to seeing in an online shooter.

4.0

Control
MAG sticks to the archetype developed by most FPS games that have come before it, and for the most part it works just fine; nothing revolutionary, though. If you've played an FPS before, you'll be comfortable.

4.4

Music / Sound FX / Voice Acting
The sound effects in MAG are generally wonderful. The sound of an entire battle raging around you is pretty amazing.

3.4

Play Value
Is MAG worth full price? When there are other games out there like Halo 3, Modern Warfare 2, and the upcoming Bad Company 2 that deliver epic single-player and co-op content along with their excellent multiplayer modes, it's hard to say that MAG feels like a complete game.

3.7

Overall Rating - Good

Something to consider with these reviews....

"Hardcore gamers" generally are going to hate the Idea of mag.

Look at most "competitive" gamers for FPS and you'll find that they tend to play in matches with less then the maximum capacity.

"Pro" players actually tend to hate dieing, and will bitch whenever something gets so complicated that you can be taken down in chaos.

The fact that there are GIANT numbers and ANYBODY is vulnerable is the exact opposite of what most "hardcore" people want.  People who largely are probably reviewers.

those guys you think are hardcore...................yeah umm there not hardcore, just noobs, but noobs who get payed to be noobs, hardcore gamers are the only ones who would love this game.

Are they accepted on Metacritic?

Yes.

@ people mentioning that the number of players dont affect your experience. Or plays a significant role.

Lets pretend Mag would have 512 player and a 2 times bigger map would that change your personal experience ? Or if mag would have 1024 player and a 4 times bigger map ?

Still not ? What if Mag would have 1 Million Players and a 4000 times bigger Map ?

That would change the whole gameplay completly it wouldnt be even comparable to a FPS.

The number of players does affect everything. The tactics the gameplay. Thats like saying all FPS plays the same.

Mag is the first step to the future. I really see Online Wars with several thousend Players at one time and with different ranks some have the power to give orders to the people. Some would play a FPS some other a RTS. Some would be there just for the managing of ressources and supply.

mag plays different and its by no means generic. lets pretend it would have gotten 87% instead of 80% on Metacritic would that be a real difference ? Fun cant be measured.

This game will have a solid fanbase and its definetly a game which can attract some new customer to the userbase. I think such games shape a profile for a console games like heavy Rain and Mag.

PlayStation LifeStyle review

In the end, this is one of the most rewarding games available. It requires that you actually invest some time in learning the ropes, and those of us who are twitch-shooters will definitely not fare well at first. The game gives bonuses when grunts are near leaders, which is a nice motion to encourage teamwork, and seems to serve its purpose quite well. There are rewards aplenty to be found for good performances, and if you get a good group together the hours will just fly by with each round. Yes, if you land in a bad squad the experience can be frustrating, and yes, the graphics are rather lackluster. But the pros far outweigh the cons here. Every FPS fan who enjoys playing online should pick this up for their PS3. This is the kind of game people will play for as long as they can, and if Zipper keeps the DLC flowing, it may be played for a good long while. I’ll see you on the massive battlefield.

PlayStation LifeStyle’s Final Score

An incredibly “massive” experience.

Less then spectacular graphics with immersive audio.

Can be very frustrating when your team is unorganized.

That's the most retarded thing I've heard today.  I'm glad everyone with a brain disagrees with you, as will be evident by the abysmal player count compared to MW2 and the lack of MAG on the pro gaming circuit.

I am loving this game, brilliant.

I've got to agree... since those people tend to destroy everyone else when they get on a Public Server.

The lack of MAG could be just realated to it being such a new game... but the point is... the People who take FPS seriously tend to not take seriously the modes with more people in them.
