These numbers are far greater than I expected at this point...I thought maybe 10%...max...WOW!  At this rate, I think it overtakes them by the end of the year.

So, get this: while Windows 7 only accounts for 6% of the global operating system market, 23% of Steam gamers are using Windows 7!

The breakdown shows a lot of statistics, including average processor speed (2.5GHz) and NVIDIA (65%) versus ATI (30%). You can even see the split between 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows 7: if you click 'Windows Versions', all the flavors drop down -- 64-bit has 15.6% of the total share, while 32-bit has 7.45%. In the past month, the Windows 7 64-bit adoption jumped 2.5%, while Windows XP dropped by 3.2% -- a sure sign that gamer geeks are finally migrating away from XP (and that Santa brought them shiny new computers!)

But of course, the best statistic, saved until last like a prime cut of steak, is that Windows 7 (23%) has surpassed Windows Vista (20%)... after just 4 months!

Those gamers sure didn't like Vista. Who can blame them.

7 32-bit = 7.45%

it means that Windows 7 did not surpass Vista on Steam.

Here's some interesting numbers for that discussion; looks like it will shortly, if it hasn't already.

It undermines the "best" part because it means that 7 actually hasn't overtaken Vista yet.

Also, look at the ratio of 64 to 32 bit users O_O

64-bit capable processors have been very common for a while now, so I wonder whether it's because most of the people with Vista got it when they bought a pre-built system (many of which have 32-bit OSs) whereas nearly everyone with 7 "acquired" it separately. Also, I wonder whether this increase of 64-bit users applies to 7 generally, rather than just steam users. I hope it does...

steam users are gamers, what did you expect? =P started running the 64bit RTM a month or 2 before it even went retail.
