No, because a patch won't fix the fact that the drive is incapable of doing it.

The drive is capable of playing DVDs.  Homebrew allows the Wii to do it.

Can you clarify that statement, please?

I am not being offensive it's just I don't get how a DVD reader as on the wii can't play movie DVDs with a few codec updates.

Exactly which part of the wii's DVD player is missing that doesn't allow this?

No, the problem is that Wii hardware doesn't align with all DVD spec for licensing official support (no digital audio).  This is why suppossedly Nintendo was originally planning a "DVD Wii" revision, though those plans were scrapped.

Nintendo should consider letting Panasonic do a media focused Wii variant, like they did with GameCube/Q. Panasonic could even make it blu-ray equipped and probably still price competitively with PS3 ($299).

Man, my Wii has trouble running youtube or even videos from the Nintendo Channel. Maybe it's my internet connection.....but I can watch HD on my 360 almost instantly! It's a cool feature but I want to see how well it works.

If you use wireless, move your modem closer to your Wii unit. It worked for me.

Failing that, you could always get a LAN adapter. I eventually did this anyway because our wireless gets simultaneous use in the house and this made sure that didn't affect me while using the Wii.

Of course if you have a 360 it probably doesn't matter that much to you, but iPlayer/Nintendo Channel/Opera (although they really need a browser update) work perfectly for me now.

Guess I need the LAN adapter. My router is less than feet from my Wii. It's beside my TV! But if it works, I can put the Wii in my daughter's room. Nothing worse than being forced to watch Beverly Hills Chihuahua or The House Bunny. NOTHING!

If you are having issues with the Wii having a crappy conection to your router you might try this. http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/routers/en_na/routerIndex.jsp I did this and I have had no issues with a connection since.

Albion - Its Fun as Ballz !!!!!

I had to disable all the "high" speed crap in my wireless router that exceeded the spec and make it more standard. The wii sped up significantly.

Your best option is the usb to ethernet adapter.

Good news for Wii only peeps! I just stream through my $130 Insignia Blu-Ray player.

just for the record. the wii can play dvds. there is a homebrew program that unlocks it. i used my wii for dvds until i got my tv with the built in dvdplayer back.
