Forums - General Discussion - AVATAR Highest Grossing movie EVER: PARTY THREAD!!

Not to mention that this is a worldwide list. Gone With the Wind may be the top U.S. grossing film with inflation accounted for, but was it popular all around the world? The United States is not the be-all end-all of everything.

and Gone With the Wind was the longest, most boring film released since The Birth of a Nation!

Quoted For Truth

Edit: Cheers to Mr. Cameron for making another really popular movie... Haven't seen it yet... Waiting for the DVD release...

I really liked this movie, I think we're going to see it in Imax tomorrow.

As for inflation, GOne with the wind was impressive, but it did have multiple re-releases, and it was in theaters before Home movies. If people didn't see it in theaters then they didn't see it. Avatars feat is impressive considering Renting is on the rise, and people could just download new movies over the internet, rather then paying to see them

You could also argue in favour of older movies that movie theatres weren’t as available (movie theatres were sparse in small towns until the late 40s early 50s), and it was rare for people to see a movie they liked multiple times in the theatre ... On a side not (that I found funny) when I saw the movie on Saturday the guy who sat next to me was on a first (or second) date was bragging to his date that this was the 12th time he had seen Avatar in the theater, to which she replied (something like) "Don't you have anything better to do with your time?"

Mentioning inflation is not necessarily an attack, and had I known it had been brought up so many times before I probably wouldn’t have mentioned it; as I said in another thread, I typically avoid all information that I can about movies I haven’t seen to avoid spoiling the experience. I personally just think it is fascinating to consider how big of a movie Gone with the Wind must have been to sell so many tickets when the market was so much smaller (or at least different). In a way it is kind of like comparing New Super Mario Bros Wii to Super Mario Bros 3, and trying to imagine how big Super Mario Bros 3 was to sell so well when games were more expensive when you factored in inflation and the market was so much smaller.

Thats true, people are seeing Avatar over & over again, just like with gone with the wind. One of the reasons Gone with the Wind was so big, was it was based of a bestselling novel and they didn't screw it up.

Excellent! I'm so glad Titanic isn't there anymore.

Off topic-ish: Gone With the Wind is a terribly long and incredibly boring movie. I really don't understand what the draw was, maybe the timing with the depression and it just hit home with people?

Changed my avatar (haha... avatar... okay I'm done) for this momentous occasion.

Neytiri is happy!

James Cameron is a genius. Aliens, Terminator 1 & 2, Titanic and now Avatar are all great movies, making one of them is a great accomplishment. But he made all five of them! Hats off to James Cameron and the best movie of 09, Avatar.

Actually, he made the sequel to Aliens. The original Aliens was directed by Ridley Scott ;)
