Forums - General Discussion - AVATAR Highest Grossing movie EVER: PARTY THREAD!!

Guys. Squirrel, by making a neutral observation about inflation, isn't attacking or devaluing Avatar, MUCH LESS YOU. I don't see why this is being taken so personally.

The point is (for those of you who don't understand inflation), while Gone With the Wind may not have grossed as much, the money it did gross was worth much, much more back then. Think 30 cent gas prices (this is a rough guess, I'm by no means a gas price historian).

Basically, he's just pointing out that ticket sales are the best metric for a movie's success, not un-adjusted gross. He's NOT attacking Avatar. Damn, he's just explaining this for the people who don't know or understand this--which judging from your angry, hyper-defensive posts, is a lot of you.

Who are you talking to? I've read through your post twice now, and I still don't know.

Look, Squirrel has been around on these forums for a long time now. He's been in a lot of debates, and even started debates completely out of the blue. He's one of our biggest debaters, so when I start a debate with facts and don't give the slightest hint of anger, why does it draw that sort of response? Why are YOU so overly defensive and angry? Seriously, who pissed in your cornflakes? You're being really annoying. And take into account that the average ticket price hasn't kept up with the average income in the United States (but apparently debating and bringing up facts means that my arguments are feeble and that I'm really angry).

i know about inflation ect and i know it was wort alot then but done forget how much $2,000,000,000 is worth now lol.

Gone with the Wind will never always bee the highest earning movie as its not even close

Nah, you really don't. The amount of money Gone With the Wind made was worth a lot more then than 2 billion was today.

Anyway. My point is, Squirrel isn't attacking Avatar or you. Don't get so angry and argumentative right away, damn.

@Montana, you're probably doing it unintentionally, but you pose some of your rhetorical questions and statements kind of bullishly. Like the forum equivalent of angry body language. So even if you're being more or less calm and rational, it just kind of raises hackles.

But I do the same thing all the time too (I always end up sounding angry/assholish by accident), so sorry for jumping on you and calling your posts angry; it was a little too reactionary.

I wish I had read this post before I wrote up my response. Sorry if I sounded angry, I don't know where, but that's generally how I write (and it's generally how I stop people from debating me for hours on end).

Appolose: It's a general attitude I see from a lot of different people. And if we're talking snobby, Squirrel pretty much mocked the thread creator, so no one is really innocent.

Edit: I was gonna say: come on, I just apologised. But NM, just saw your next post.

Can we shut up about inflation. We know. We don't care. GTFO.

Well, some of us do...

Anyways, I think it was quite justified to bring it up, whether or not it's wrong: this thread isn't about bringing up a particular piece of trivia just for the heck of it, it's about bringing up an astounding one, so it's quite fine discussing whether or not it really is astounding.

The same debate has already ruined every other Avatar thread. Now we have a nice new one and right away someone comes in with "darrr, inflation!".

congrats to Avatar. Definitely deserves the title imo. Awesome movie.

Not trying to be a fanboy. Of course, it's hard when you own the best console eve... dang it

God forbid Avatar can have everything. Its already been ripped away relentlessly for its plot, characters, and just about every detail. And now it can't even have the accomplishment of being the highest grossing film. I've read these kinds of inflation arguments on Gamefaqs, Youtube, Vgchartz, and just about every site I frequent. As someone who really enjoyed the film, I'm getting really annoyed by it.

i said we do understand, and i do thanks

yes gone with the wind made alot of money 'for its time' but guess what Avatar made 2 billion......gone with the wind didnt so as this thread celebrates...its the highest grossing movie ever....

i haven't said he has attacked me or Avatar. so where are you going with this?  ummmmmmmm angry? im not angry. im annoyed that people cant just celebrate something and have to try and ruin it for everyone else. its not fair, if you cant take the fact that it IS the highest grossing movie ever...why did you come on here?

This thread is about how astoundingly well AVATAR has done. at the end of the day its brought in more money then any other movie dispite inflation ect. thats it...and its supposed to be a celebration of that fact

Oh yes, I agree that that's what it's about, that's why I think it's fine to have that brought up.

I understand that, but it isn't fair to assume that everyone who brings that up it's attempting to sabatoge any good thing this film has accomplished.  And such a subject as this is practically asking for such points to be raised.
