For my money I'm expecting FFXIII to be one of the worst lol. Certainly nowhere near my top 5. Maybe somewhere down there with Oblivion.

With all the delays and such from FFXIII it better be damn amazing lol.  But i feel itll just be a 'better than decent' RPG, but not something breathtaking.   Hopefully FFversusXIII will be the best RPG this gen *cross fingers

Can't wait to get back to Melbourne and finish this game.

Since everyone is throwing their opinions around I might as well share mine. Bethesda makes the best RPG's this generation. Yes, they sacrifice story in a sense. Their games don't have as strong or as scripted narratives. But they allow you to shape your own story with the absolute freedom they present. They are the only ones taking the genre to where I believe the genre should ultimately end up. Absolute freedom. You can steal from anyone, kill anyone, and go anywhere. NPC's also carry out daily routines and carry conversations with another instead of mostly staying in place, they feel more like living breathing people then in perhaps any other rpg. There are other nice touches like bodies not disapearing like they do in most games. I won't make any arguments for bethesda games having the strongest of narratives but with such freedom it doesn't really matter to me.

That is completely false, Oblivion doesn't allow you to shape anything and it's an awful RPG. Oblivion's world is the most static and sterile world I've seen in an WRPG in a looong time. And the writing is one of the worst I've ever seen in my life.

I agree. Oblivion's world feels like it was built in a freaking map editor. Absolutely static and unchanging. Nothing to discover to reward your explanation. Generic townspeople with way too many repeated models, no enemy variety, the worst level balancing system ever, a mediocre combat system... truly a horrible game. There was nothing redeeming about it except the sheer size of the world, which is completely nullified by the fact that there was nothing in it.

Wow, you must really hate some of the older elder scrolls games then. I hear this a lot from people but for the time I loved the stuff they had put in the game. It was refined a fair bit and I suppose "dumbed down" although I hate using that expression. The Dark Brotherhood quests in particular were amazing. I loved the fact the game made you the central character for everything whilst it still felt like each of the characters was going about there lives. Also, the mods really helped make that game for me, Elder Scrolls modders are amazing. I know that's a bit of a cop out for Bethesda but I suppose that's the joys of PC gaming.

I liked Morrowind, and indeed the mods for the game are quite good. Bethesda makes, hands down, the best mod tools in this industry. I will never argue with that. As great as Oblivion's were, Fallout 3's were even more spectacular.

I loved the game but I'm not sure best RPG of the gen. Was my game of the year 2009 though (which is pretty impressive considerring the games released last year). There have been some amazing RPGs released this gen. Some of my faves:

- Dragon Age
- Oblivion
- Witcher
- Neverwinter Nights 2
- Fallout 3
- Mass Effect

For me, Dragon Age is easily the best Bioware RPG of the gen; Mass Effect felt a little thin for a Bioware RPG. Witcher was better for moral choice than Dragon Age, and whilst NWN2 and Mask of the Betrayer were fun, I think DA:O was just more polished. I liked the immersion and open worlds of Oblivion and Fallout 3. Out of all of those I really can't choose a fave.

Have you played Demon's Souls?

Not yet. It's not released in EU and I've a tight budget and a tonne of games to play through already. It's on my list of games to get as I've heard nothing but praise for the title.

Shame...honestly, it's like a 3rd person Diablo to me. That, coupled with the online features, makes it a work of pure genius.
