Forums - Nintendo Discussion - MARKETING is the Main Secret Weapon of Nintendo's Wii Phenomenon

We'll truly see the effects of marketing on a console this year. Natal will launch with significant marketing muscle backed by MS. If it becomes successful as the Wii, then marketing truly does make a big difference. Otherwise, we have to attribute the Wii's success to something more than just marketing.

To be honest I'm more excited about the Saints going to the Superbowl than hearing anything about the Natal ttytt

With the Wii being the less powerful of the current console competition and not necessarily the inventor of motion controls in video gaming but the improviser of it seems to have "marketing the system" as one of the main reasons to its success a side from great games and intuitive gameplay mechanics.

Marketing is hardly secret and Nintendo's marketing, despite flashes of brilliance, is not head and shoulders above the other systems.

Nintendo's SECRET WEAPON is local multiplayer.

IMO there isn't just one "secret weapon" as to why the Wii is successful. There are several of them, including their good marketing, innovation of motion controls, family-friendly theme, classic gaming icons ( Mario/Zelda/Metroid), Simple/Fun games ( Wii Sports and other party titles ) and at the time the system being much more cheaper and affordable than it's competitors. It's just my opinion though, so all of this could be wrong.
