Hey Guys,
i wanted to share some of my experiences about Agarest (Agarest Generations of war / Agarest Senki / Record of Agarest War / Whatever) and later Cross Edge (Cross Edge / X-Edge).
Agarest:
Oh holy damn, i love this Game. Its a real pain from time to time, but also very lovely. The battle's are pretty common for Strategy (RPG) Games, but theyre very quick done, its not like a fight takes 30 minutes, as it does in several other Games of this kind. The Story itself is solid, but nothing special. at the beginning, its pretty boring to tell the truth, and it gets better very.. VERY slowly.
The worst part in Agarest is the ammount of fights.. there are Spots on the map, and you can travel them like this:
'Battle Point' -> 'Battle Point' -> 'City wothout any use' -> 'Battle Point' -> 'Battle Point' -> 'Story related Scene' -> 'Battle Point' -> 'Battle Point' -> 'Another Scene' -> 'City with a story scene' -> 'Battle Point' -> 'Dungeon*' -> Repeat.
The Story scenes are mostly done with Pictures, and from time to time with a 3D spot with the Characters moving while theyre talking.
The Strong Parts of Agarest are:
the love this Game is made with. (And no, i dont mean the sexual scenes). / Some of the Characters stay after the >Generations shifted, because of their higher life-cycle. (Elfes.. and i dunno what all the races are). And you pretty cant avoid to like them after you spent so much time with them. / and of course, you can let the Computer handle your battles. He's stupid like hell, but its enough in smaller fights.
The main-motivation in Agarest are the Numbers. Leveling.. Equip.. Combo's.. 4574625 Hit Chains... its very elemental, and if you can keep playing the game 'til numbers are necesary, you WILL finish this Game.
Graphics: nothing special, its based on sprites and Pictures, so i'd give that a 5/10.
Sound: Awesome, and damn atmospheric. ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iEFKZ4PIck / http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1zP-QaiFRL8&feature=related ) 10/10
Gameplay: The Combat is very frustrating at first of you want to improve your Combat Skills, but if you got it, you are happy that you mastered it. // the 'Battle Spots' should have been integrated into the Dungeons, that would have kept the motivation higher, especially before the game cought you. 8,5/10 for Combat, and 6/10 for the overall Game Design.
Playing Time: i played more than 100 Hours at my first Playthrough, so i dont care about replay Value. 9,5/10
Overall: This Game Frustrates you, but if you say yourself that it 'could get better', you'll be rewarded with great Humor, well done Characters and of course high numbers. A Game that makes you laugh, but also cry sometimes: 7,5/10 (i would have given more, because i fell in love with it, but that wouldnt be fair).
(notice: im not a big fan of SRPGs, so you dont have to be one to get the fun out of this game.)
i'll make a thread like this for Cross Edge, thats what im playing right now, but i can already tell that it cant even scratch Agarest, because this Game is based too much on Characters you may know, and the 3-4 Guys (15~ Villains) arent that much worth mentioning.
