Forums - Gaming Discussion - The Video Game Industry is Dying!!!

It's not dying. It's survival of the fittest. Some of the weak have been eliminated because of the recession, but in an industry where billions are at stake, others will rise to take their place. Plus, some of that money is still out there but untrackable in the form of increased downloadable sales and facebook/iPhone apps and "free to play" MMOs and online games eating some of the pie etc etc etc.

There will always be a place for big budget/big studio games and small indie cheapies - much like movies or TV or music or publishing or anything else.

The industry is just fine.

Can't we all just get along and play our games in peace?

Yeah that's why the game industry is now bigger then the movie industry.

As long as the Wii continues to do gangbusters and break records, I'd say otherwise. As long as the fastest selling game is contained within this gen (Modern Warfare 2 looking at me), I'd say otherwise. As long as the online community continues to grow, thank you Microsoft, I'd again: say otherwise. Yes, some companies have sunk, but many are still making money, and others are just rockin' house (Hello Nintendo!).

IMO, the industry, while having some issues, is on fire!

You gave a shout out to Nintendo and Microsoft but wheres Sony??????

Black Women Are The Most Beautiful Women On The Planet.

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

So the 2nd highest ever sales for the industry is a sign that the industry is in trouble with a year of economic problems and many titles which would have sold well being delayed in hopes of finding better economic times?

I think we'll get another article exactly 12 months from now which states that the industry is 'doing better than ever' from the same site and they'll forget this article ever happened. Some trends! LOL, one year... hahaha

The game industry is changing, not dying. It is adapting. It cannot step backwards, because its legacy follows it around. It is going to sidestep. And no, I don't mean move to the Wii.

Also, not including DD in that revenue chart is borderline outrageous.

Well, in fairness, due to the slowing of the PS2 and the PS3 price cut, Sony is responsible for a good chunk of that revenue loss.  It was something like a billion less in North America alone, wasn't it?

I think faaaar to overdramatic...no different then the net bloggers tryin to get hits. Yes...developers are gettin crazy with high budget low return mindset..or the battle of the blockbusters! who can make the bigger hollywood game BS..a developer releasing a couple of 20mil budget games that get a good success( would only need 500k to break even on HD system) and quality Wii games( 250,000 - 300,000) then maybe that blockbuster games shit..and they'll be fine right?

i agree that the industry is in trouble, and needs to adapt. It is not dying though, it is just that costs are growing far faster than revenue+market size. Something has gotta change or companies like EA are gonna keep getting smaller or go bankrupt altogether.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

huh..how, assuming that PS3/360 games make a profit of 40 per copy sold: 500,000(sales) * 40( profit) = 20mil so they break even...if 1mil ppl bought the game thats a gain of 20mil?...now im not good at sales a shit like this but i assume math is right...unless im missing somethin?
