I'm saying look at the guys' chart (provided it's accurate of course). While down from last year, revenue is at it's second highest in a generation. Or look at our own website. You'll notice a crap load of games are selling a crap load. Based on the industries phenomenal performance, this shouldn't exactly be the troubling time it is.

Like I said though, I think that the only games that are selling are the "AAA" ones. The fucking Guitar Heroes, Modern Warfares, WoW, Wii fits, etc.

I'm not afraid of the game industry collapsing, like I said in my last posts. I'm thinking that it's gonna shrink, as we're going to see nothing but those generic "AAA" games, instead of games like Heavy Rain, Mirror's Edge, Demon's Soul, etc.

The revenue, I'm guessing, is being concentrated into companies like Activision, who's not only breaking even, but making a profit, while other companies who aren't even breaking even will drop out. I know that's business, and that's the free market, but it fucking sucks. We're going ot have fewer companies, fewer games, and the few games we get are probably going to be the "AAA" ones.

I mean, it's already been fucking happening. Fuck Activision, and its milking of Guitar Hero. Fuck the revenue, if it's only going to a few select companies. We as consumers, are gonna suffer, and there's nothing we can do about it.

*slits wrist*

Alright, I'm not THAT pessimistic XD... actually I sorta am O.o

Hopefully huge ass companies like Sony will keep experimenting, and EA will be able to make both good games, AND market them well *crosses fingers for Bad Company 2*

Ah, I see. I was confused by your statement. I thought you were saying that while people are still buying games, they're only buying cheap ones now because of the recession. It's true that the upsurge in game costs means that it's harder to take chances. You've got to have the biggest, most easily assured of sales game out there, and you've got to pump a lot of money in to advertising to ensure it stays that way. And that's just not a business model that the entire industry can thrive on.

So are you not worried, that the number of firms are gonna down, and as a result, the number of games are gonna go down? I think it's always good for consumers to have choice, and I fear that we're gonna have fewer of them.

IDK, are you hiding in a bunker like me, or are you just chilling outside? XD

It's amazing how VGchartz members of all people are so distracted by a colorful graph, that they don't even bother reading the text under it.

I'm not worried myself. There'll always be a videogame industry and there'll always be enough games to play. Hell, right now there are too many to play. I'm just saying that the guy's article hits a lot of good points, and the current industry is locked in to a rather unsustainable model. Will the number of games come down? If things keep going as it is, sure! because there will be less people making them, and the games coming out require more and more people to make.

I guess I'm chill'n outside the bunker, watching people buy increasingly larger tanks and getting them stuck in the mud.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.

I personally like this qoute:

"Companies need to stop forcing industry standards and allow the market to set standards for itself."

So is it safe for me to say that we can blame Nintendo for forcing motion controls on the industry when its obvious that the industry couldnt handle it? The industry nor the market was asking for motion controls during the last gen.

No, it is not safe to say that.  Just look at the sales of the Wii.  It is obvious that a large portion of the market wants motion controls.

Don't Play Stationary 4 ever. Switch!

It is kind of sad that this is the general impression I get from this thread.  I thought this community was better than that.

The top selling games are, because nobody wants to take a risk since they don't have as much disposable income. You shouldn't be looking at the demand for the top selling games, but the demand for the entire industry as a whole. Since you look at the numbers, unlike me, you can judge if the sales of the entire game industry, are up or down.

I'm just making the safest bet here, that the demand for games, as a whole, is not inelastic and recession proof. It's a luxury, and luxuries are the first things that get cut.

I mean, you're really saying that the sales, compared to the last gen, went up? With no 100 million PS2s, $60 games, and a recession? The total ammount of games sold had to have gone down, or else my head will fucking explode.

EDIT: I completely missed checking the second page before writing this.... Actually, you can disregard this entire post, as I see what you are saying and I'm worried with you.

This chart that was posted in the article clearly shows that revenue for games is up by around 100% since last generation. I don't think the average prices has risen 100%, so the only conclusion I can draw is that sales are up even in units. And that is before considering non-retail solutions.

Even with the economic downturn games are selling more than ever. And even with the companies getting more money then ever, they incurr more losses than ever. That's not a good thing.

(naturally, that is assuming this graph is accurate, I'm guessing it's NPD figures)

Well I'm not too surpised. I mean if most of the industry ITSELF is in denial about its own decline despite 1000s on layoffs and decreasing revenue, I certainly don't expect its customers to achknowledge it either.
