Forums - General Discussion - Yet another abortion thread...

To be fair, I didn't want this to be a thread in itself, I just wanted to make it as a side-pro, not the main benefit of abortion. However, after asking Naz, it was deemed better to create a new thread rather than necro-bumping an old one.

Sorry if it seems callous, it's not my only view - just one that I thought would be new to the table.

You sure would love to be living in the utopia of "1984", wouldn't you? You won't have any rights, because the government will protect you from yourself.

Sorry, I don't know where you pulled this one from. Being pro-abortion means that I think that the state should have less involvement in people's lives, not more. Also, one of my justifications for being pro-abortion - because it's not the Government's role to protect those that aren't its citizens - explicitly sets out some limits on state encroachment.

BTW, there are philosophical underpinnings behind the idea that a fetus isn't a person. Seems less cold than simply stating that you can't murder what isn't a legal citizen. I don't think that personhood is something that should flow from the state, either.

Yeah, I understand that some people view a foetus as a human being, and I can see where they're coming from. I just don't think that the state has any right to prosecute a person who hasn't attacked one of their citizens.

It's like the Amanda Knox case - she was an American who killed a Brit, murder is against the law in the USA, but the US state didn't try her, Britain did, as the victim was a British citizen.

That's my view, anyway.

The problem is, that for pro-life people, who advocate that the fetus should have the rights of a person, including the right the live, and the presumption of innocence, your reasoning would sound awfully similar to "it's ok to kill masses of people who are statistically more likely to be delinquents"

Well Smith, not that it relates to this thread, but Countries do try people for killing individuals who aren't that country's citizens. They also try people for other crimes committed outside of their borders sometimes. One such example is child sex tourism in southeast asia. Don't think that you can rape a child for money in thailand and not spend the rest of your North American life in prison.

I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.

Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.

Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!

Well, I'm wonderfully ignorant on these matters, so I shan't debate further - through fear of looking like more of an arse.

Well, I figure the rape thing is cause for one.

But if you didn't use a c-boy, birth control, or the morning after pill, you better keep that baby!

So basically we're telling the people who are too incompetent and immature to use protection that they have to raise a child...?

Social engineering is a potential solution to abortion, abortion is not a tool of social engineering

I figure it should be legal, but we should be working to minimize its necessity.
