Final Fantasy XII: 572k

It's the only main FF with US and others first weeks.

PS3 alone will do 500k.

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

Looks at pre-orders, in US it's 150k  on both consoles. Pre-orders may sky-rocket near release, but, anything under 500k would be fail to me. Anything under Mass Effect 2 will be fail as well.

would be a fail to me as well, but it isnt hard to figure out why... last time i checked it's pre-order number was at 30,000 for the ps3 and at this time (when i checked a few days ago) should of been at the 100-thousands. squarenix made bad decisions and should of kept their mouths shut about what they did to ff13 to keep both versions balance (equal) whiched pissed off a lot of ps3 owners

I don't know... I would bet more than 500,000 in first week, counting both consoles, but the JRPG genre, as it seems to me, is saturated in the Americas, but I really don't know... Normally, they sell better on handhelds. We have to wait to see what happens.

If you're trying to defend Final Fantasy by saying its a 'mainstream' franchise and therefore that makes it 'ok' for its sales to drop later in a consoles life, just because other series had a similar experience, that's still not a good reason.  And for the examples I gave, you think they did better because they weren't part of a series or were 'niche' titles?  No, they had to work 100x harder to get popular in America/Others, which is why I brought them up.  Indeed, there is some kind of sequel effect going on, but that doesn't mean its just acceptable and we should just shrug it off as the status quo.  I'm sure the boys at SquareEnix weren't just treating the sales of FFXII as 'acceptable losses'.

As for the sales of FFXIII, you are a lot more optomistic as I am.  I highly doubt it'll even reach that of FFX, let alone get to the level of 8-10 million like you're saying.

No I am not trying to defend it, I have given you the reason for that happening. Can you come up with any other reasons. why did this decline happen for the last 2 generations?

S-E probably weren't happy with it, but what can they do to reverse it?

I gave my reasons and you disputed it.  There's not much more to 'come up with'.  To do so would be changing my position or trying to come up with some random claim to counter yours, which I'm not trying to do.  I stick to my views unless data proves otherwise.  And as yet, I haven't seen anything that has.  And I doubt the sales for FFXIII will change that either, unless it somehow does sell beyond FFX and/or FFVII.

One other thing to keep in mind is that FF sales are always extremely front-loaded: over half of an FF game's sales in any given region tend to occur in the first week. FF13 is shaping up to follow that same pattern, if Japan is any indication. This is bad in some ways -the games have no legs at all- but it does tend to make for great first-week figures.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.
