Forums - General Discussion - the grammar debate

It really irks me. Really, really irks me. Though that's likely a result from my job more than anything else.

I don't think us being on the internet excuses poor means of communicating. For instance, reading this sentence: "It really annoys me,that people call me out on this, over the internet" you have two stops that are unnecessary. I can't stand reading things that make me sort through misplaced punctuation and poor grammar just to understand what it is they're trying to convey.

That's not to say that your post was particularly bad, it wasn't, your meaning was clear and it flowed well. But, like zexen said, I'll read the posts that are much more clear first and am likely to skip over those that aren't.

I respect your opinion,but disagree.

who cares? its the internet...its not like its gonna change the world whether you put a comma after you troll the 360...

I always use semi-colons after trolling the 360. . .

okay, lol, I just post whatever, I couldnt care less about grammar, this isnt exactly academia here, its a video game forum not a thesis for a masters degree

And that's fine. But we all have different value sets. For me, if it seems that the writer doesn't see the worth into putting effort into what they have to say, then it likely isn't worth reading.

Why should I bother reading what you don't see as worthy to communicate properly?

To take it a bit further, why would would one consider it only worthy to put forth an effort in using proper grammar while writing in academia? Firstly, why is important that you ensure you use proper grammar while writing a thesis? Personally, I would have two main reasons: I would like to portray my meaning to the reader as best I can and I would not like to lose marks (especially on something that can be so easily avoided).

Obviously, on a forum you do not lose marks but you may lose readership. Whether or not that matters is up to the individual. However, the other reason, I think, is much more complicated than that. Why do you post on these forums? Is it so that you can share and discuss opinions with others? Or is it simply to state your opinions as if writing in a journal? If you wish to share, do you not feel that your opinion is at least of the minimal effort it takes to convey it properly?

Don't get me wrong, I'm bound to have mistakes (I'm sure in this very post), but it isn't very difficult to put forth even a minimal effort.

I know that this seems like I'm making a mountain out of a mole hill, but I think us "grammar nazi's" are too often portrayed as being absurdly particular, but rarely is the opposite ever said (in this context) - most of us are absurdly lazy!

This is too true, actually.

I concede my argument!

Yes, it matters. Punctuation and proper sentence structure makes the meaning of a sentence less ambiguous.

The problem is that it makes you look unintelligent/uneducated. And you can be damn sure I'm going to judge you by your grammar; without much else to gauge how seriously I should take a person, I'm just going to assume you're an idiot who should be ignored if your post is rife with grammatical errors.

Crusty VGchartz old timer who sporadically returns & posts. Let's debate nebulous shit and expand our perpectives. Or whatever.

wow!!!!!! That's all there is to say.

I don't mind the occasional grammar mistake, nobody's perfect and English is not my first language so I'm bound to make some too. What I can't stand are people who feel the need to shorten every word to the point where I feel like I'm deciphering some kind of secret message (I think this trend is even worst in French).
