Forums - Sales Discussion - NPD Gamasutra article (interesting facts on Sony)

The PS2 software sales will also put a signifigant dent in the profit. Most of the PS2 sales the last couple of years have been software developed a couple years back so now really just pure profit.

Its libraries that sell systems not a single game.

BTW - In 1 quarter with AC2, U2, MW2, and FF13 sony has probablly made about 400,000,000 million in profit from those games.... 1.3 billion in lost revenue? For 4 quarters? 1.3/4 = 325,000,000.... Hm... I'm sure Sony had released more than 4 games in Q4 of '09...

I didn't know AC2, MW2 and FF13 was made by Sony.

They still get like 10 dollars per copy sold. Which... now that you mention it I think I clicked a 2 instead of a 1 on my calculator.

Yes, but it's estimated the PS2 software lost $700 million and the PSP software lost $200 million. PS3 software only increased 5 million units which isn't nearly enough to offset those losses.

Anyone can guess. It takes no effort to throw out lots of predictions and have some of them be correct. You are not and wiser or better for having your guesses be right. Even a blind man can hit the bullseye.

FF13 wasn't released in NA.

AC2 & MW2 aren't published by Sony

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy
In the past we played games. In the future we watch games. - Forest-Spirit
11/03/09 Desposit: Mod Bribery (RolStoppable)  vg$ 500.00
06/03/09 Purchase: Moderator Privilege  vg$ -50,000.00

Nordlead Jr. Photo/Video Gallery!!! (Video Added 4/19/10)

If PS3 is OEMed like many consumer electronic products, then a loss of USD 100+ sounds reasonable if we add the margin of the manufacturer.

That joystiq link was before the price cut...

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

SCE's already in the red roughly a billion dollars for the first half of the fiscal year. This quarter certainly isn't going to help that.

A. this isn't going by FY

B. The 1.3 billion in lost revenue is scattered through those auarters already.

A. I wasn't citing specific figures, just the general trend.  3/4's of this year's loss (in terms of schedule, not dollars) will fall under the fiscal year.

B. Obviously, but again I was commenting on the trend.  And the profit loss is likely to be even more pronounced given the actual profitable platforms are falling away fast (PS2, PSP).

Lol you guys are hilarious.

Before price cut? Everything points in Costs lowered > Price lowered.

Nordlead - Your right. I'm still in WW mode as given by total units shipped. But Sony still lowered cost by billions this year WW.

Grimes - So what? Costs of not manufacturing Ps2's and PSP + Lower costs of manufacturing the Ps3 + Raised SW sales + 1.3 billion already scattered through 3 of 4 quarters = good enough for me.

Id like to see those estimates.

Google search is your friend. First few links returned by searching "PS3 Slim Loss":

Sony Still Sells PlayStation 3 at a Loss – Analysis - X-bit labs

Thanks... We already knew this... no where in there do I see up to a hundred dollars though. Closest we have is the CFO saying 10 percent... which is far from 100.

Here's the link to the $100 loss estimate.  It's from Diawa Institute of Research and was reported on TV Tokyo before hitting trade papers.  And yeah, a basic google search would've led you there.

I actually haven't seen any other specific estimates on the confirmed PS3 slim loss though.  I'm curious where you're getting your $30 from, can you give us a source?

Sony's Chief Financial Officer.

That figure isn't in reference to the $299 slim, it's in reference to the $399 fat.  Again, where are you getting a $30 loss on the slim from?

So you are predicting a profit for Sony this quarter??

...Are you really suggesting that Sony, a company scattering to find profitablilty in its gaming division, would lower costs more than costs saved at expense of market share while all through last year and this they have been a broken record about profitablitity and cutting cost as they are allowed to?
