Making faster computers or digital formats is not the only means of technological innovation.

that is not all that Sony has done, come on you know better than that lol. what about cloud computing huh that is just one example i can come up with.

the wii-remote is a unique innovaton, i will give you that one

Sony invented cloud computing?

sorry cloud networking or whatever lol, as far as i know, yes, sorry i was getting tired last night lol

Edit: yeah basically they are planning to offer computer based solutions over a network to you without you requiring powerful hardware, so just imagine being able to play on a HD game without needing a PS3, now you know what I mean, of course it is used for more practical things like now, such as storage, but none the less it shall go that way eventually, as that is what Sony have planned for it, from what I have read.

OnLive is developing this service, not Sony.

No that was announced after the whole PS Cloud idea came out, and MS are just trying to copy Sony as usual

OnLive isn't Microsoft.  And it predates PS Cloud.

The idea behind Onlive far predates both of them.

OnLive wants to work with all the console manufacturers.  I'm not sure if Microsoft's committed yet though, pretty Sony and Nintendo haven't (and won't).

"In video game terms, RPGs are games that involve a form of separate battles taking place with a specialized battle system and the use of a system that increases your power through a form of points.

Sure, what you say is the definition, but the connotation of RPGs is what they are in video games." - dtewi

What would Sony gain by blowing MS up! They aren't the market leader and Sony needs to win the waggle-fest market~~

Theorectically speaking, another 27.7%, even if microsoft left if would be a dark day as well, they all provide jobs to people who work in the industry... so NO, NO BLOWING UP ANYTHING

PS: there are more HD Consoles combined than Wii consoles, so that would make PS3 #1

Well your point kinda makes sense now! Blowing up MS HQ would have positive effects on PS3. Those people working for the industry will find jobs at Sony or something if they survive

Yeah, Sony relies on the 'Blades and razors' business model.  IE: Sell the blades at a loss and make money on (overpriced) razors.

Worked great when they dominated.   Doesn't work so well when you don't.     Sony owned the casual base with the PS2 but they allowed MS to lure them into fighting them on their own domain (PC centric core games like online FPS).   Sony took MS on full bore with the PS3 simply assumed their casual audience would tag along when the price dropped down.   Seemed like a safe bet, until Wii arrived 2 days after PS3 launched and immediately starting taking all the casuals gamers.     Now Sony is stuck in a bloodletting competition with MS for one side of the market while Nintendo is king of the other.

At this point the best thing Sony can do is survive until next generation while minimizing loses.   I expect the PS4 will be nothing more than two PS3's ducted-taped together with the wand as an integrated part of the controls and they'll drop the blades and razors model and sell consoles at a profit.

Psst...you got the model backwards.  Razors are sold at a loss (one time purchase) and blades are sold at a profit (many bought over lifetime of razor).

@OP

Great article.  I wish more stuff like this was posted on the forums instead of the silly opinion pieces we see all the time.

no idea how to make this properly work

No its saying that the inevitable decline in PS2 sales combined with the poorer PSP performance has taken a large amount of profit from them which would have hidden losses on the PS3 side in the past.  What you might hypothesize from the article is Sony would need to decrease costs further on the PS3 and continue to push PSP sales and further revenue from PSN.

Sony cannot do anything to increase PS2 sales anymore, its in a natural decline given its age.  The PSP can be saved with some more aggressive pricing and marketing but its on a slippery slope still.  The PS3 market is reasonably healthy and provided they can turn a profit soon then will no longer be the huge drain it has been in the last few years.  Its not a complete doom and gloom article, it just highlights some things that might dictate what Sony could do if they aim to be profitable in the near future.
