Forums - Nintendo Discussion - IGN Editorial: Blinded by MARIO

Well I don't know about NSMB as I haven't played it... but I can certainly speak about being blinded by Mario.

Back in the late 90s to early 00s I thought platformer was one of the dullest genres, my experiences with Crash, jak & daxter, Spyro and Ratchet & Clank on PS1+2 being very dull... I kept away from Mario platformers on my own consoles partly due to the other platformers, and partly because I have a natural tendency to ignore whatever is popular (I was introduced to Zelda OoT by a friend... if it hadn't been for that I wouldn't have bought that either).
But with the Wii I became mildly interested in Mario Galaxy... and someone on VGC reccomended I try SM64 on Virtual Console as a tester, I did so and loved it... the first platformer I properly enjoyed. As such I bought Galaxy and loved it even more so.

Whether this IGN writer is just being an ass or not I can't tell, perhaps 'Splosion man would be better to me than NSMBWii as well, I will likely not play either and find out. But my guess would be he is just trying to downplay Nintendo like many game "jounalists" do... because I have found Mario is usually in a league of it's own for platformers, and I have no nostalgia factor helping me enjoy Mario games.

I don't like watching people have breakdowns, so this is actually kind of hard to read.

Somebody having such a negative reaction to a game selling well - to people having fun with it, and their friends buying it as a result - is distressing in and of itself. I winced, reading this.

And the whole "NSMBWii plays just like the DS game" memetic needs to die

werd i played both, and they are different.

but....he having a breakdown because he is trying to get people to see his point, but no one will listen (since it got platformer of the year and all)...i agree with him to some extent though

What exactly do you agree with him on? That New Super Mario Bros. Wii isn't as awesome as sales suggest? That, in fact, it's mediocre? That's the word he assigned to it: "mediocrity".

I couldn't disagree with him more if he were trying to tell me God Hand sucks (ha-HA, IGN...), but that isn't really the point. The man is having a breakdown. In public. He's letting everyone see him tattoo his heart onto his bicep, with all the pettiness and ugliness made plain to the world. I'm embarrassed for him. I'm ashamed for him.

well he is a writer, so he is supposed to write about things pertaining to his opinion and receive hits for the site, so yeah i mean its his job, right now your showing your colors by being ashamed of him because he wants to express his opinion as a writer

and i agree with him on the fact that mario galaxy is top notch stuff nintendo should be doing, not bringing a game that has no online co-op or any more than 4 characters, they should be bringing us some online,  and more characters, maybe a little comical story or something (just examples)....all these things are possible on the wii but the developers played it safe (some call it laziness) with this game forsure. you cannot seriously say that they worked 100 percent on this, and i will go as far as to say that they do not deserve the sales, surely its a great game, but to cash in such an ammount of money for little effort is what annoys me, and it annoys me even more that people dont see that.

Proffesional writers express things... well proffesionally....

the article doesn't quite come off as proffesional... it comes off as well... embarrising.

It reminds me of when one of my friends would drunkenly complain that his band wasn't getting a chance when people with less talent got all the credit and hype.

whats professional about writers writing about games? i think jokes and hahas have to come into play when you write about games.. .

Bleh... if 'Splosion Man was made by Nintendo IGN and other people would still complain... too original so it's strange.. lagging 4 player mode.. and quantity > quality levels... >_>

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

I haven't played this 'Splosion Man but I love platformers and it sounds pretty fun. But can somebody tell me if it has any levels half as cool as Mario's new 8-1 level, or the World 9 stuff? Nintendo is known for the best platforming level design in the world (or in its worst case scenario it's a 4-way tie with old Sega, Capcom, and Rare).

Pretty much same thing happened to me instead it being SM64 for the DS...

He gets paid at IGN right?

Also, proffesional writers tell jokes... all the time.  Have you never read a newspaper or ESPN or something.

He's supposed to write things as a journalist - much as some deny it, specialist journalists ae still supposed to be journalists. Journalists ae free to write editorials, but that isn't what this is. The man is having a breakdown and it's embarrassing to watch.

I'm not going to get into a discussion with you about whether or not NSMBWii is mediocre. That's not what I'm here to talk about. But if those are your openly expressed opinions, I'm glad you don't have a journalistic position at a major site, otherwise I would have to go through this wincing fiasco twice.

I'm with Khuutra here. Reading this made me feel embarrassed.

Oh, well, looking forward to future articles about Super Mario Galaxy 2. "Nintendo added Yoshi and a drill and called it a new game. Nintendo are lazy (again)."

This is why I only go to IGN for reviews, nothing else

their review staff is excellent, I trust them there

but everything else they do is just........bad

the guy who wrote this does review games =p....i think hes alright, i mean this article really isnt bad, its not perfect, but i wouldnt say its bad

errr... Are you talking about Daemon Hatfield from IGN? He has been a certified anti-Wii person for a long, long time (maybe always?). I have stopped reading anything he had to say already a year ago...

everyone who isnt on the nintendo team is anti wii, i listen to all the podcasts and they always have something to say about how motion controls are not good, and that the wii is weak, and how the wii is sad for not having dvd capabilities, its not him only, but i dont blame them honeslty, i feel the same way about the wii, the system is not for me and apperently for many of the ign reviewers, whether he hates the wii or not though, he makes points that galaxy and other games on the wii are good, hes doesnt bring up the system or his hate towards it, but more the game...i find his article to be good overall

Since you don't like the Wii (something you are fully entitled to ) of course you find his article to be good... On a side note, Daemon Hatfield actually WAS on the Nintendo team, it was sometime during that time that I stopped reading him.

Also, personally I think that criticism of any Wii game should be written by someone who generally likes the Wii, this way when reading the criticism I can know that the criticism is not because of disliking the Wii but because of actual problems with the game itself. But that's just my opinion/wish.

yes i have >_>

but how proffesional can you be when writing about games....i mean hes trying to give points on how NSMB is not all that good, and gives jokes to back it up, sure some cross the line, but its the way he wants to write it to get his point across
