Forums - Nintendo Discussion - IGN Editorial: Blinded by MARIO

dib8rman said:
To start, Mario games aren't like other games, in order for a Mario game to be a success commercially it's not about the amount it sells it's about the amount of hardware it moves. But looking purely at sales, it can be said that a Mario game going 10 million sold is a rare occurance, but when compared to other games it doesn't seem so rare.

If you don't believe me here you go:

http://www.vgchartz.com/games/index.php?page=2&results=50&name=mario&console=&keyword=&publisher=&genre=&order=Sales&boxart=Both&showdeleted=&region=All&alphasort=

to put it plainly, having Mario in the name doesn't guarantee millions sold.

Fan's are fans, everyone has their degree of interest it's OK to hate on people who love something, in fact it's promoted as hate means there is love, people hate when something is loved that's usually the reason for hate in fact. It's because something is encouraged when someone feels they are infringed upon through or in response to that encouragement. =P

But hey Mario is a household name, but he wasn't always.

Mario sold his first 10 million because he was great back then.

He sold 1 million because he wasn't as great as he was when he sold 10 million.

He sold 10 million again which means he's as good as he was when he sold 10 million last time.

Numbers don't lie but subjective yammering and propaganda can come from anything for any reason :)

how about i give you the full chartz

almost all of marios games got 1m+...i am sure those numbers might not be correct because some of them are extremely old, my point is check out all the WII games....yeah....thanks for proving my point further

i dont see any propaganda here, there is no turning the words around to trick people into the game sucks (the game doesnt suck >_>), and i dont know why you have to go around saying that i yammer for having a point and trying to back it up....

Who didn't see this coming after Nintendo and specifically this game destroyed the competition in the NPD.

They're a little late actually, I expected this last night.

That he may have gone about it in a more unprofessional way, there is no question about that. But you seem to disregard some points that may have certain validity to them. Just because there is a good possibility that your beloved Mario MAY be a Slightly inferior platformer doesn't mean that it's about "OMG IT SELLS TO MUCH SO IT HAS TO GET HATE!" Hell I can accept that there may be games out there or at least will be, that surpass Uncharted 2 in that genre. True at the end of the day it's about personal taste but that doesn't mean that you should disregard other great games just because the mustached hero is the main character. It is that mindset which allows all of us to experience many gems. Hell if it wasn't for me giving other games a chance and keeping an open mind, I would have never ended up playing Legend of Legaia (loved it), or Einhander (a shmup made by Squaresoft? no way!). Lets try to remain civil with eachother and give other games a shot. That doesn't mean Mario will get jealous or stop making games because you try other games. Lets all keep the one thing we have in common in order to connect in a positive way: gaming. Have a good evening (or day if your in EU).

I happen to love the game. So his points arer pretty much wasted on me. But he seems to be asserting that people like myself who love the game are somewhat ignorant, naive, and blind and were schemed by Nintendo's big shiny red box with bright colors and aren't sophisticated enough to understand we've been flim flammed and bamboozeled. All I was pointing out was that as a Wii fan this isn't anything new anymore and is to be expected. Every time Nintendo (Wii specifically) has acheived or broken a record these type of articles appear, it is not coincidence. And it is obviously for hits. It is unprofessionally done and I really see no point in contributing much to the theater that goes on around articles such as this.

But you do have a good point that's been made: Many times hype & name alone gives games a free pass. This is no more evident than the IGN reviews of GTA4. I think some of the hate from IGN comes from the fact that the Wii audience doesn't "listen" to them. They gave MKWii what an 8.5? or something yet that game goes on to sell over 20m. But I digress. Yes, many big name games get these ridiculously high scores simply because they are the next games in a beloved series..they seem to be sacred cows..and I think what you were trying to say is that one should not have any sacred cows, and if that is indeed what you were saying I agree wholeheartedly.

But I don't agree that NSMB is a mediocre game.

i also dont agree that nsmb is a mediocre game, i am just saying that it doesnt deserve the sales based on it quality, but yes, people are blind to mario and the fact that its a household name, just like gran turismo, and ff, and zelda, and mgs, if they put it on the cover people will buy it...now whether the game is deserving of the sales is up to the developer and how good they make the game....btw its not true that ign will give ninty games a low score, they gave conduit an 8.x and galaxy like a high 9....zelda a 9.5 and prime a 9.5....these games were deserving of every sale and rating they got, now nsmb got a 8.9 which i agree on, but really does it deserve 35252345234523 billion sales? is it the best platformer? is it the best goty? is it the best game ever? just like MKWII, why should MKWII get 321522352 sales when modnation racers (assuming its the better game) will get 3-4 million sales tops....

Wait, are you judging the quality of a game and saying it doesn't deserve the sales just because you don't like it? It's like me saying that Uncharted 2 doesn't deserve the sales because it's very linear and extremely easy. I think it's just your opinion and I know a lot of people that love NSMBW, it's truly an amazing experience for fans.

@Lolcislaw

Yes, and COD has a lot of bugs, short campaign etc.

no no no!!!! dammit lol....i love NSMB!!! its great!!! its fun!!! and its a damn good time...it is a great game....but it was not all it could be and i dont think it deserved the sales it got, its not my opinion but more saying that ninty is playing it safe, and that it didnt deserve best platformer

Tell me why this game doesn't deserves the sales. What they should have added in your opinion?

That quote tree was becoming a war crime.

No, Kasz was the one originally making a point here, and if you wan to argue with him you have ot address his point. Professionalism in the relaying of one's opinion does affect perceived validity for many people, myself included. The man isn't writing an editiorial. He's having a breakdown. I'm embarrassed for him, because the language and vindictiveness on display here is not something that a grown man should be showing in public about anything, least of all video games, and in that case least of all because a game is selling better than he wants it to.

He's complaining that people like New Super Mario Bros. Wii too much. And he's doing it in a completely unrelatable way.

hes saying its selling TOO MUCH FOR ITS QUALITY AND WORK INPUT....he relating the game to another game that in his opinion should be regarded as a higher platformer.....i know his point, hes saying that daemon had no professionalism, he was expressing himself as writer, even if he has no professionalism, he still makes a valid point which is professional enough for me

You agreeing with him does not mean he's writing professionally. That's not how professionalism works.

you are once again missing the point, i could care less if he was professional, he still makes good poi nts....you know what fine, HIS ARTICLE WAS NOT PROFESSIONAL...are you happy? does that make you happy? that the ign writer was not professional enough for you....or does it make you sad that he actually makes a good point which happens to be that a mario game is not all that?

Part of the reason it's not professional is beca use he actually doesn't make any good points. It's not very good and it's not very professional.

whether he makes good points or not is subjective....he makes plenty of good points imo, like the fact that nsmb has no online, or that ninty didnt make any big jumps, or that the game has 4 characters, idk about you but he made plenty good points, some were off, but either way they are his points, and they are valid

No, it's not subjective. He didn't make any good points. "Because online" doesn't mean anything. If the online isn't good then there is nothing to brag about, but the actual inclusion or removal of online doesn't determine quality so much as the actual implementation.

YES IT DOES...online is something some games should have FOR EXAMPLE a multiplayer game such as NSMB, could you imagine how much fun it would be to play people with headsets and leaderboards and user created worlds...the posibilites are endless...and yes whether he made good points or not are subjective, anyone could say he is right and back it up, or you could say he is wrong and back it up.....online does mean something, but sadly ninty doesnt seem to care >_>

Nope. Every game doesn't need online. He didn't make any good points. This is not subjective.

did is say every game needs online? PLEASE BOLD THAT FOR ME BECAUSE I AM REREADING MY POST AND I SEE THAT I SAID THAT SOME GAMES SHOULD HAVE ONLINE >_>.....and he did make good points. it is subjective...we could do this all day...but unless you say something usefull i wont be replying to you anymore

YOU LIKE TO POST LIKE THIS A LOT DON'T YOU? IGN IS WRONG AND THEY MADE NO GOOD POINTS. NSMBWII DOES NOT REQUIRE ONLINE MULTIPLAYER. I THINK IT COULD HAVE BENEFITTED BUT THE GAME IS SO GOOD AS IT IS THAT I DON'T FEEL LIKE I WAS RIPPED OFF - BECAUSE I WASN'T AND WHAT I GOT WAS A GREAT GAME.

Got it memorized?

OMG, did i say EVERY game needs online, why are you spinning what i say, re read my post please i sad SOME GAMES SHOULD HAVE ONLINE!!

----for you the game might be played with people around you, but maybe the game can work with people that you play with 35423 miles away with headsets...its FUN, just as fun imo, but more importantly it would show that ninty is ready to step it up *like they did with galaxy*...ATLEAST it tried online, even if it had a budget of 0 dollars it still tried...mario though, the guy whos dev. have 25421354 dollars, no online?? what? comon they could have done it, but they played it safe....it could have been alot more
