It did help, before the price cut the wii was having trouble staying ahead of the 360, while the ps3 was eating chunks of market share. After the price cut, the wii went back to its top spot console wise.

It helped somewhat, but it quite quickly fell to below the levels of the previous year. Only after NSMB was released did we start seeing big YoY gains (alongside phenomenal sales).

If you look at the chart I made in another thread about Wii sales in 09 relative to Wii sales in 08, you'll see from looking at the point of the price drop that it doesn't seem to have had much long term effect, the effect after the release of NSMB is far more pronounced.

Wii is over 100k more than it was last year. :O

THAT'S NSMB Wii. A new 2-D Mario platformer can have an amazing effect on the momentum of a console.

Now Nintendo just needs to prove they are still serious about the Wii with more games, particularly more motion plus and balance board games, and they need to start showing games for the vitality sensor as well. If they do this, the Wii will be an unstoppable force in 2010. If they continue to slack like in 2009 and put their trust in 3rd parties to fill the gaps (which they largely did not accomplish), sales could plummet to even worse numbers than 2009. NSMB Wii will help carry the console for a little while longer but even a game this good cannot carry it forever.

Monster Hunter 3 is a good start, I think this game will have a bigger effect in the west than people think.

yea and the fact it got a price cut..

When the price cut happened, it didn't help much, sales for the wii weren't different and were still bad against 2008. Only when NSMB Wii came it skyrocketed.

It did help, before the price cut the wii was having trouble staying ahead of the 360, while the ps3 was eating chunks of market share. After the price cut, the wii went back to its top spot console wise.

Actually before the Slim and all the price cuts (so during the summer) Wii was selling more than X360 and PS3 combined...after the slim and the consecutive X360 price drop it was selling bad (like you say, a bit over 360 and way under ps3) so a price cut was needed. But is this a wrong thing? I'm happy to see good sales for all the big 3 and you can't say really if the YoY Wii posted in the first two 2010 weeks is because of price cut or also software (like NSMBW)...I think that without NSMBW the Wii would not be over 400k this week, possibly also lower than that.

360 did better than I expected, we should see a gap of less than 50k between the PS3 and 360 for the most part during the quiet part of the year..... thats acceptable for MS I think.

sorry to burst your bubble, but i don't think that will happen, i think ps3 will keep on selling over 200k and the gap will stay over 50k, until Natal comes, and even I don't know what will happen then, but we shall see the true power of the PS brand at that point in time. No offense intended lol

LOL!

lets hope so

I hope it stays over 200K

but the average gap should be 40 - 70K

buy FF13 jneul!!

Here's that chart:

Notice the point of the price cut, around week 40. It has a boost and quickly falls into a trough. On NSMB release we see a huge rise, and aside from the last week of November Wii is very strong since then.

dude even if the 360 sold 10 consoles you would have still said it did better than you expected! the 360 can do no wrong in your eyes and how can getting outsold by 50k a week be "acceptable" are you all forgetting the 360 is still way cheaper than the ps3 and wii and has "more games" than both of them. theres no excuses like the 360 is 5 years old or its been the same price for long. the real reason is because the wii and ps3 are so much more popular around the world than the 360, thats why the 360 cant hold up against them

Clearly I wouldn't have said it did well if it had sold 10 consoles,

Clearly the ps3 will outselll the 360 for most (maybe all) of this year,

Clearly you  PS3 can do no wrong in your eyes either.

Clearly you want to make an arguement where one doesnt exist.

that clear?

thanks.  dude.

ATLEAST he called you dude!

Good graphic! Hope the Wii stays YoY but if I remember correctly the first months of 2009 were even over 2008 so it's difficult...but let's see if Wii manages another great year!

it is not really NSMB boost

it has more to do with HOLIDAYS SALES

Time to Work !

If you remember correctly? It's right there on the graph ;)

The chart shows sales relative to the previous year, not absolute sales, so that's factored in. The only possibility for it not being factored in is if it's only higher due to shortages last year. If sales keep up YoY in January that'll prove that it was more likely NSMB.
