Playing Darksiders now. It's a pretty horrible game. Everthing in it looks like it's been bought at the IKEA of western game design.

Drab, grey, samey graphics.
Single-button button-mashing for gameplay.
Cheap grinding missions to extend playtime. All the f***ing time.
Completely unenganging story - seriously, I still don't know why I'm doing the things I am or what my motivation is supposed to be. All I'm doing is "go find X, he can tell you how to get to Y" (told in a "suitably" gruff voice).

Bayonetta, at least, is colourful and fun.

Sounds to me like you haven't played the game.  Darksiders is plenty colorful.  There are no "missions".  There is just the main story, and the open world to explore and treasure hunt.  And maybe if you watched the cutscenes and paid attention throughout the game you would understand.

And while yes you can get by with hitting only one button, there are plenty of combos that involve multiple buttons, and these combos are quite cool looking, not to mention to use multiple weapons like your scythe, crossblade, power fist, or pistol requires different buttons.

I'm 2-3 hours into the game and trying to stay motivated to play more.

Of course there are "missions", in the sense that there are things you have to do in order to progress. Unfortunately these things, so far, has seemed mind-numbingly grindy to me.

I've been watching cutscenes and trying to pay attention, but the awful directing and writing isn't helping me.

Can't comment on the more exciting combat as I haven't seen any yet.

EDIT: Obviously, if you like the game, then good for you. Saying that it's shit is just my opinion.

Uhh yeah, it's a niche genre, because DMC is the exception to the rule, and not the rule itself. It's sort of like trying to argue that LOST isn't a niche TV show, just because it's one of the few that didn't get cancelled, doesn't all of sudden mean the genre is mainstream.

themanwithnoname's law: As an America's sales or NPD thread grows longer, the probabilty of the comment "America = World" [sarcasticly] being made approaches 1.

While it probably won't win me any friends, the first thing that popped into my head when I saw Bayonetta for the first time was "Lame" as it seemed like the developers were trying far too hard to be cool. Until the past couple of weeks I basically ignored the title, and I'm still not that interested in it because I can't get passed the initial reaction ...

It is entirely possible that the kind of reaction I had to this game is fairly widespread, and consumers may not care about the quality of the game because of the image of the game.

This was actually my initial reaction to the game too. I wasn't ready to give it a chance immediately either.

I got over that, though, because I am a sucker for bad-ass action games, and htis is way better and more technical than any of the Devil May Cry games I've played (1 and 3).

Also, I didn't expect it, but Bayonetta herself is actually a good character? She kind of crosses the line from exploitative to actually having somehting to say, which I expected in no capacity whatsoever

Well, I'd personally like to see Darksiders do well. It seems like the beginning of a great franchise.

I dont know...darksiders already seems been there done that franchise to me.

Bayoentta on the other hand...I hope they don't make another one. Unless they can bring as many new ideas to the table, let it sit as a underrated classic that it is.

Lol, Darksiders is a "been there done that" game and Bayonetta isn't?  What about all the DMC4/Bayonetta comparisons....  Seems they are both "been there done that" and what game isn't these days?

In style posybly it appears done before.

But in excecution Bayonetta is so far above anything else... Game just feels differenent from anything you'd get from Activision, Capcom or anyone else this gen.

Been there, done that NOT FOR A WHILE franchise , I would say, and certainly it's never been done like DrkS. Critics complain of the similarities between Darksiders and famous franchises of the PAST. I think anybody would be really hardpressed to find a game quite like Darksiders this generation. Bayonetta? straight-action with simple button-mashing combos and over-the-top style?  there's been plenty of that, good game though but really not "that" special.

Bayonetta isn't ab utton masher unless you play it on very low difficulties

the only thing thats sloppy is your taste in games.

@Khuutra

I've played 'til chapter 9 in Normal. Everything is pretty straight-forward. You MUST evade/dodge to activate witch-time or you won't be succesful in combat, after that you follow through with any simple combination. It's button-mashing. Yes, there's a lot of variety of moves and whatnot, but you're esentially doing the same thing in every fight and it's not like the game has much of anything different to offer besides that.

There are enemies later on where you don't get witch time by dodging

Several bosses, too

A button masher implis that it can be beaten by wialing on buttons. Having to dodge very precisely in order to activate witch time, wherein one cna use any combo one likes, does not make the game ab utton masher.
