I know there are a lot of RE4/5 haters out there.

Let me make a statement:

The survival/horror aspects that were seemingly lost in RE4 and 5 ARE NOT due to game play. It was entirely due to the way they told the story, and the lack of a horror atmosphere.

If you want a scary Resident Evil 5, go play Dead Space. It has a similar 'action shooter' control scheme, and is one of, if not the, scariest games I've ever played. I don't want to say I or my fiancee are horror game buffs, but I can't think of a series I've played that was better and making me not want to play due to terror than Dead Space is.

If RE1-3 were remade, and had atmospheres similar to Dead Space, I can assure that they would be frightening. I especially think RE1 would be a great fit, due to the constricted hallways of the game, as it tends to hearken to the Ishimura. I couldn't imagine walking towards a narrow halway in RE1, and seeing a flash of thunder through a window, illuminating the silhouette of a zombie.

Oh you don't have to answer them... they don't know what they are talking about.  RE4 lost nothing, however RE5 did lose a lot so I wouldn't defend that one.  Anyone that has played the early Resident Evils knows the controls were bad and that playing them RE4 style would be amazing.  But RE4 lost nothing int he survival horror aspect... gave it more than any could have imagined.

RE4 needs to get the GoW collection treatment. I would like to see that game in HD.

i 100% agree with you. personally, the controls of the pre resident evil 4 games in the series are the only thing keeping me from playing them. just too rigid in my opinion

Yes for the remakes but no for this "and switch to over the shoulder when aiming."

Eh.

I'd argue that RE4 lost a bit of horror. Of course, one of the benefits of the crappy scheme of fixed camera angles was the problem of not knowing what was around the corner. With RE4 fixing that, it was a little bit easier to know what was coming, and not be scared about it. I don't remember RE4 being incredibly scary outside of the labs with those guys that required heat sensors to kill. Of course, RE4 was one of the best games ever made (IMO), so despite the lack of what I call 'horror', it was an excellent game.

RE5 on the other hand had even less of a scary atmosphere. At least RE4 tried to bring something scary to the table in the way of a creepy Spanish atmosphere.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Well people get mixed up of what survival horror is.  It's not about bad camera angles and having something jump at you becuase you can't figure out the controls.  It's about surviving a pretty creepy atmosphere a nd RE4 was all about that.  Even in the early village area hearing that chainsaw rev up was pretty creepy.  And then as you move into the rest of the game which is at night and sometimes only being able to see enemies because of the glow in their eyes or a lightning strike added to the atmosphere.  Then of course what yo mentioned.  Game was pretty creepy and kept up the surivival horror aspects to the fullest.  It didn't need cheap shock value or bad camera angles to make it creepy.

Now it wasn't the creepiest game or the best definition of surivival horror but definitely a great one in the pack.  Fatal Frame, Silent Hill, and Eternal Darkness are still better survival horrors in my opinion but are not better games overall than RE4.  That is why I'd like to see it go back to the RE4 style of play and atmosphere, something RE5 took away an dsomething RE0-Code Veronica didn't have control wise.

I think the reason RE5 really took away any horror elements was due to co-op. Games just aren't as scary when you have buddy next to you or across the interent, and I think that shift alone really directed the game as a whole. It became more about widescreen action set pieces and strategic positioning/gunplay, less about surviving with limited resources or that creeping eerie atmosphere. The idea of "support" really fundamentally goes against Survival Horror, which is probably why they transitioned RE5 wholesale into action territory.

I didn't mind though, RE5 in co-op is probably the best experience I've ever had with the series. It was actually a little hard to go back to RE4 (and it's looooong escort missions) afterward.

@Mr.Stickball

i see what your saying, but Dead Space is about as fun as watching paint dry.

I dont see the big deal in bringing them to XBL/PSN with updated graphics and better controls for shooting, i hate just randomly shooting and wasting 3-4 shots because i shot to the left of the zombie.

I recently bought RE2 on PSN and i love the game but the camera angles are so freaking annoying, its not up todays standards, like the description says "The game that started the survival horror franchise" needs to be brought back and show why Resident Evil is so loved.

Dont get me wrong i like RE4 and RE5 and it has the creepy feeling of "im alone in this strange world" but they dont have the "WTF JUST HAPPENED ZOMBIES ARE EVERYWHERE IM SO FKING SCREWED!!!" feeling.

I think RE5 looks more like a pure action game than anything else. It's not about the co-op, it's about the atmosphere. Everything that really made players want to play RE in the past isn't on this game.

Yes, RE4 lost a bit of "horror" but still, it's a Resident Evil game (the essence is there) but RE5 is just a pure action game with "Resident Evil" in the name.

For me:
RE1, 2 and 3= Suspense/Survival horror
RE4= Action/Survival Horror
RE5= Pure action game

Well it's not surprising that while playing Uncharted you'll think Resident Evil. It's not hard to believe that most of the inspiration for the Uncharted series came from RE, namely RE4 haha. Lots of games owe there inspiration to that one. Truly a wonderful game indeed.

As for remaking the early titles, I would love to seem them all remade in RE4 style. Really could care less about any graphical updates but using the RE4 control setup would be wonderful. I mean the controls for the early style of RE games were nothing short of horrific so it would be nice to see them updated to something better. Would be quite an undertaking but I think it would pay off for Capcom.

I'd definitely buy them but man I would rather them for Wii than PS360 haha.

Huh I did not notice any zombies or tyrants's in Uncharted lol, and you could not truly platform in R.E like in Uncharted, I think they are two very different games, Uncharted is not survival horror, need I carry on.

You know what would be interesting tho, if R.E copies Uncharted 2 controls, to me that would be much better, Uncharted 2 controls are much better, less clunky and it is so much easier when you can run and gun.

it's the future of handheld
