Forums - Gaming Discussion - Bach: 360, PS3 have plenty of power to offer, Nintendo can't say that

I think it goes without saying that there'll be Wii HD.

I think it's a matter of when it'll be released and how much will change between the Wii and Wii HD. Will the next Wii include new different controllers, or continue with the same Wii controller set-up and just upgrade graphics.

Also, what other possible features could it have. Nintendo will also need to compete with Natal coming out later this year, and SONY's 3D and motion control.

The potential success of each of these additional features can be argued about, but each of HD consoles are adding features, and the Wii isn't. It doesn't mean the Wii isn't fun... but the Wii needs to maintain or increase sales (same as the HD consoles) but it doesn't appear as though Nintendo has announced anything to address this yet.

I think it goes without saying that people have gone bonkers with their suspicions. What Wii HD? What competition? So far the competition is a no-subject with Sony as it doesn't even have a complete control scheme made. We keep hearing about Natal and how many companies are producing games for it and we haven't seen even one so far. We don't even know how much of the hd twin audience is interested in these inventions.

As far as Nintendo is concerned, they're miles ahead of where the other two are at this point.

Natal is all about expanding the audience not catering to the existing one.  They have plenty of games like Halo: Reach to keep current owners happy.

Around the Network

Going by US release dates:

NES - October 1985
SNES - September 1991 (6 years later)
N64 - September 1996 (5 years later)
GC - November 2001 (5 years later)
Wii - November 2006 (5 years later)
??? - Likely November 2011 or 2012

Where exactly does the Wii HD fit in here? And why would Nintendo want to fracture their userbase? Nintendo's next console release is going to be a brand new console, not Wii HD.

sony and microsoft should just partner next gen and release a super uber console. imagie, halo, gears of war, uncharted, gt all in once console? WOW

Nintendo has a lot of Motion Control to offer.

While others can't say that.

@Garnett

Its' a progressive part of HD consoles, improving all the time. More open worlds, better physics, more detail. Everything takes time, but Microsoft & Sony are the ones who will break into this moreover than Nintendo. Microsoft & Sony do try with games such as GTAIV, Fallout 3, Oblivion and others. Maybe technology isn't ready yet, or maybe with the newer games we will see more in the upcoming future. The only open world game I can think of for the Nintendo console is No More Heroes, but it isn't really open world, very limited.

Microsoft's Robbie Bach has said that the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 still have plenty of power to offer, but Nintendo can't say that about their console (Wii). Speaking to TheProvince, Bach said;

"I think in many ways we’re still on the upside of the console lifecycle. Historically, the content cycle has been driven by graphic technology. There’s still plenty of power available in the Xbox 360, there’s still plenty of power available in the [Sony] PlayStation 3. Nintendo probably can’t say that. They may have a capacity and a power problem on the graphics side that they need to deal with. But when I look at the [overall] cycle, I think there’s still plenty of upside given what we have today."

Maybe time for the Wii HD? There's still huge speculation that Nintendo will reveal an upgrade to the console at this years GDC, or even at E3 2010 just in time for the holiday season. Either way, Microsoft and Sony are looking to take advantage of 2010 with their motion sensing peripherals.

Good that theres no negativity coming out of microsoft's mouth about sony. This is the kind of attitude I expect from companies talking about other companies.

Sometimes, when facing a powerful foe, enemies need to ally.

Drake and Eddy Raja when faced with the monster zombies.

The countries of Earth when faced with the Formics

etc.

Enemy of my enemy causes strange relationships to happen.  When the Wii wasn't seen as a threat, Microsoft and Sony were thinking of the Wii as a cute puppy dog that was a nice second system to own.   Now it is the monster, Sony and Microsoft are more focused on Nintendo as the enemy.

If nintendo doesn't go HD, I'll be really disappointed. Id rather have a nice looking Zelda/Mario game than an '''Intuitive'''' one. Or at least, they could include both... But it's Nintendo eh. They're cheap they won't invest their money on that... they'll just make a Wii 2 with better motion sensors w/e they call it. They'll continue making those casual games that no real gamer cares about (wii music? really?). Then you will see amazing games like, "Game party 4,5" come out on the system. Lets face it: We don't give a damn about that. The production cost of a wii game is a lot more cheaper because of the limit of the system. That's why such crappy third-party companies like DDI and name-them-all-corp invest the smallest amount of money making shovelware that will be bought by the casual gamers (kids,moms,etc). Going HD will raise the production cost and will force those money-hungry companies to invest their money somewhere else or even bankrupt. Doing such will increase the ratio of good games vs bad games on the system.
