Forums - Sony Discussion - PS3 smoothing beyond that of high-end PC graphics card

To me personally I have always thought the PC couldn't compare to the PS3

Hmm I'm afraid I have yet to see this super anti-aliansing on any ps3 game. So far all of them sucked in this department.

PROUD MEMBER OF THE PSP RPG FAN CLUB

That's what this threads about, they are just starting to use the cells to process the graphics, instead of using the graphics card, and they can achieve much better smoothing results, compared to ANY graphics card. (Uncharted2, Saboteur) And on the PC vs PS3 price side argument, most of you are forgetting the cost of the OS, and I didn't see a Blu-ray drive in the parts list, as well as bluetooth, wifi, and a joystick. And if you thought Killzone2 graphics suck, I think you need a new tv or something, really.

interesting read but we already know the ps3 is a beast...

Until someone can show otherwise (this article is a start) what has been consistently seen in multiplatform titles, is that the 360 has done superior anti-aliasing.  If the PS3 has some tricks up its sleve, it would be worth discussing those, irregardless if you think the PS3 is a "beast" or not.

"Irregardless" lmao. That stopped me from taking your post seriously.

Maybe if they (Pandemic) spent their time in more important things (fun factor, testing, better graphics) instead of investigating exotic software based AA algorithms, The Saboteur would have been a better game, cheaper to make, and they would still be open.

@raygun

well, the cost difference for the games is also left out of the calculation.
pc games cost about 10 €/$ less than ps3 games at launch.
since we compare the prices from a gamers position it is important to keep that in mind.
10 games = 100€/$ to spend on hardware.

and yes, killzones graphics DO suck compared to e.g. crysis with texture mods. ...and it's years old now. (i'm not a fan of the game, but the graphics are still the best around)

sadly, pc graphics are held down by the hd twins because the big projects are multiplat nowadays and why create engines that really take advantage of a pcs power if it's going to be downgraded for the hd twins, which will sell more copies of the game anyway?
the pc versions, if they exist at all, are often poor ports. they can be poor because the pc is so much stronger, it will still run the games at higher resolutions and more details than the "original" console version.

Sorry to the developers, but in the day the PS3 can pull of Crysis maximum settings like graphics, I'll take a read at this dev statements....

And I think that won't happen, I don't know why...

Granted the RSX and PS3 as a whole probably doesn't have enough pipelines to do Crysis BUT you are missing a very interesting point that the CPU can do really advanced AA. Last I checked the i7 didn't do AA, nor any PC CPU. It's an eye -opening read to say the least.

I just wish the whole "the CELL" talk would end... it's a 4 year old chip for FFS, and it took 3 years for devs to learn how to use it... it's just outdated now.

Oh yeah it does graphics... great! so less processing for the CPU aspect now, this is just pointless (especially when the thing has been on the market so long).

Any modern X86 PC CPU can do this.

Do you know what its like to live on the far side of Uranus?

A few of you still don't get what this is all about. If you watch some of the Naughty Dog videos on Uncharted 2 tech you'd understand the crux of this, and that is they are just now starting to use the cells to do the video processing, freeing up the gpu, and allowing them to push more polygons to the screen, AND that the cell processing IS BETTER THAN WHAT THE GPU COULD DO. Since they are just starting to use this tech, future games on the PS3 will benefit.

Back to the PC vs PS3, and ' killzone2 graphics sucks compared to Crysis' argument, well doesn't every game 'suck' compared to Crysis? Well no, actually, Crysis is on a tropical island, what would killzone 2 look like if it was set on a tropical island? I've played Crysis, your comparing 2 completely different locations, Crysis didn't have the intense particles, smoke, missiles, dust blowing, lightning, explosions that Killzone has, the AI and character animation was much better in Killzone2, just look at the hit bullet animations (Crysis characters were good at first with the soldiers on the island, but they seemed to get lame later on) Again these are 2 different locales, why even compare?

As far as my quad core PC goes, it doesn't have a blu-ray drive, and it doesn't seamlessly fit in with my 1080 tv set up like my PS3 does, and most games I buy for the PS3 were bought at discount, amazon has great deals on preordering, you can save $5 to $10. No wasting 30 minutes to install/tweek/problem solve/drm issues either. (except for that long MGS4 install, lol)
