The PS3 is a hot complicated device which uses lead free solder. I wouldn't be surprised if the overall failure rate is eventually or already higher than every console in existance which sold more than 10M units, except for one exception.

do not put the HDD into another PS3, it will reformat it, the best way is to back your data up to an external hard drive
On Topic: Unfortunately a lot of original PS3 owners I know on here have experienced YLOD, the best advice I can give is if your PS3 starts making noises and freezing on you, it is time to start thinking about getting a slim before your PS3 breaks on you, I still thiink it is not down to the user as some people claim, because I looked after my old PS3 and it got poorly after 3 years of usuage, so I got a slim.
it's the future of handheld

my PS3 has broken twice, both within a month time (broke again 2 weeks after I got it back or so)
both got repaired for free although I was out of warranty, but thats a pretty rare circumstance.
in my clan there is like a PS3 breaking every 2-3 weeks.. (a clan with about 30 PS3 owners, all VERY active players. on this site to, I see a 'my PS3 broke, what should I do' thread every week or so..

do you and your clan kick your ps3's around or something??I never hear of YLOD anymore and if they do occur, they happen on the 60gb
