Forums - Sales Discussion - Holiday 2009: PS3 vs. 360 Exclusive Game + Hardware Sales

This is a simple compilation of console exclusive game sales from September 19, 2009 to January 2, 2010. All older titles are included, though just rough estimates (please inform me if I missed anything). I count timed console exclusives (Star Ocean 4, Final Fantasy 13) in this list because their rival console counterparts haven't been released yet. I started the count on September 19 because that is the week right before the launch of Halo 3: ODST, which is important to include in this list because it is the highest selling console exclusive of the season; basically I consider Halo 3: ODST as the unofficial start of the holiday push.

X360:

Halo 3: ODST - 4.43m
Left 4 Dead 2 - 2.44m
Forza 3 - 2.23m

Total: 12,986,000

Hardware: 5,142,592

Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty - 70k
Afrika - 62k
Yakuza 3 - 45k
MLB 09: The Show - 40k
Lair - 33k
Resistance: Fall of Man - 30k
White Knight Chronicles - 25k
Motorstorm - 21k
Warhawk - 19k
Heavenly Sword - 19k

Total: 10,477,000

Hardware: 6,921,658

As is obvious, the 360 has fewer console exclusives still selling, but each of them sells far more per title, resulting in a much higher total. Many of the older 360 console exclusives aren't selling anymore, in contrast to some of the older PS3 console exclusives which have seen a resurgence of sales thanks to the PS3 Slim, which ironically outsold the 360 hardware by a hefty margin.

Overall, despite the larger number of PS3 console exclusive titles and hardware selling 25% more throughout the holiday, the 360 still sold 20% more copies on console exclusive games this holiday season.

Interesting notes:

1.) LittleBigPlanet is the highest selling title released before September 19, 2009, followed by Halo 3. Amazing legs on these games.
2.) Valkyria Chronicles, a game that received no new advertising, no bundles, and no price cut suddenly sold 253k. I doubt that this number is accurate, but if true, this is a huge win for SEGA and Sony.
3.) Lips has quite a following, apparently, closely competing with Singstar.
4.) Killzone 2 disappointing holiday sales, as it was released this year, because it was outsold by many older games.
5.) If we don't count Halo 3: ODST as a holiday title, the PS3 exclusives would outsell the 360 exclusives by 20%.

Edit: there, you have your console exclusive labeled. sheesh.

Its cool that we see a showing like this

Things like...Splinter Cell Conviction getting delayed for 360, Halo game FPS being released(big sales), Final Fantasy 13 being released exclusive on PS3 in Japan...have huge influence on the sales totals.

What Im saying is...its just a bunch of random stats. No logic or trends can be spotted, other than great legs on older titles.

Mmh cool.

Take my love, take my land..

Wow at Little Big Planet! I didn't expect it would have such amazing legs.

And sorry to be an arse, but you've included some multiplats (according to VGchartz rules- PC+360) in the list. Namely the Left 4 Dead games, Mass Effect and Gears 1. Still an interesting comparison.

No real surprises there. MS core titles always sell very well, heck even on Xbox the core titles outsold the most likely Sony equivalents.

Conversely a broader range of Sony titles tend to have better legs than Xbox, etc.

So nothing too much of note, really. Not knocking the figures, just pointing out it confirms well established trends. The main surprise, as always this gen, is that compared to last gen the numbers are so close!

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

i know this thread is just stating the obvious. yeah, that was my purpose. just a compilation so that everyone can see what exactly happened during the holidays without having to go through the lists.

Actually, Lips is a bit of a surprise. I thought it would tank with 360 audience, but it's actually selling okay really.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Lips and Singstar did far better than I thought. Individually, they don't seem like much. But if you add all of the various titles together, they're pretty impressive.

On another note, anyone notice that Lair did 33k over the holidays? I wonder who bought it..

Side note :

in the battle between LBP and Halo3

Halo3 was still heavly bundled but to me, LBP was not (is it true ?)

That makes the LBP sales even more good (no need to mention how this game costed close to nothing)

Time to Work !
