Forums - Gaming Discussion - PS2 sales unbeatable?

I am 100% pretty sure that DS will suprass PS2, 60% sure the Wii will suprass the PS2

The PS2 is probably going to remain ahead of the Wii in terms of LTD sales as the thing just keeps selling. However if we discuss them as phenomenoms in the market, Nintendo has arguable achieved more against far heavier opposition and they have done so almost solely on the backs of their first party software efforts which may remain unparrelled as far as first party exclusive system sellers are concerned.

Oh and the DS is sure to pass the PS2, that much you can count on.

I'm actually curious as to how much of the Wii's success is attributable to the hardware as opposed to the software.  It's software is quite a bit weaker than the PS2's at this point, at least in quantity of great games.  It's interesting, if the Wii hadn't had a new control scheme, the consoles scenario would probably mimic the Gamecubes.

My counter argument is this. Whilst the PS2 had a greater quantity of excellent content it did not have as wide of a spread in terms of which markets this content targetted. So whilst the PS2 had many excellent core and hardcore games it was lacking in comparison to the Wii in terms of the variety of casual markets it was able to tap. This is the reason why the PS2 titles don't tend to have sold as much as the individual Wii titles as the Wii titles especially from Nintendo are effectively unanswered and collected the entirety of their respective markers whilst on the PS2 the titles had much greater competition and market fragmentation.

Arguing what the Wii would have been like without their innovative control scheme would be the same as arguing what the PS3 would have been like had it launched for the same price with mediocre performing hardware. I don't think its very fruitful discussion personally.

I think the Wii can make it.

People talk about Nintendo's new hardware replacing the Wii, but I'm not sure if that'll be the case. Even if Nintendo's new system is backwards compatible and successful, there may be use for a much cheaper, older system if they haven't experienced it yet.

Ask yourself this: how many years will it be into the next gen before Nintendo "replaces" games like Mario Kart Wii, New Super Mario Bros Wii, or Wii Sports Resort? These games will last years, seriously, unless replaced they'll still be selling in 2014 (+ more Wii games to come...)

The Wii's lifespan may depend on this question. I don't think the current Wii games will ever get old - the graphics are fine and all. It'd probably take Nintendo themselves killing the system off for it to die an early death. I guess if Nintendo's new console doesn't cost much more, is backwards compatible and uses new controllers (incompatible with Wii's) the Wii's hardware would drop quickly, but...

"Will the DS beat its sales?"

Yes, easily. I don't think the Wii (or any other console this generation) can outsell the PS2 but the DS will sell 5~10 million more than the PS2.

No other console will beat it. Only DS.

The DS is not a console it is a handheld. Technically it does not really count if it outsells the PS2 in ltd sales. But I believe the Wii has a 50% chance of eventually outselling the PS2 in ltd sales assuming the successor of the Wii is delayed and the Wii continues to outsell the PS2 in weekly sales.

The Wii trying to maintain its sales pace against the PS2 of last generation.
Important to note the Wii will achieve 100 million sales after 5 years. It took over 6 years for the PS2 to reach 100 million ltd sales.

If the DS is counted, all iterations of the Gameboy should be counted. The Gameboy sold a huge number of units over its lifetime and different iterations. 200 million Game boy units had been sold.

The DS is participating in the gaming industry, of course it counts.

Do you have a source for the GB or GBC sales?

The DS definitely. For the Wii, it all depends on Japanese sales. With the way it started, I would have thought so but unfortunately, Nintendo couldn't keep the support and momentum up. If they can have a strong year there this time, I'll be more confident

DS beats PS2 (130 mil)
Wii does NOT beat PS2 (130mil)
PS3 beats NES (60mil)
Wii does beat PS1 (80mil)

Currently playing: MAG, Heavy Rain, Infamous

Getting Plat trophies for: Heavy Rain, Infamous, RE5,  Burnout and GOW collection once I get it.

IMO, at the moment, nothing short of an earthquake in console gaming is going to prevent the DS from outclassing the PS2. This year, Nintendo sold something like 30 M DS. The GAP is something like 20M ATM.

About the Wii, with the same timeframe since launch and the same number of christmas seasons, the Wii is at minimum 15M ahead of what the PS2 was.

In 2009, the Wii sold more than PS2 managed in its best year (2002).

Maybe we should wait a little to say that the "wii won't make it".
