Forums - General Discussion - Anyone who hasn't watched Gurren Lagnn should watch it...

Saw it on SciFi... Eh hem... SyFy.
Loved it, a lot.
That says a lot too, coming from someone who could only get into Azumanga or Haruhi.
It does seem underrated in America though. Not enough Dragon Balls or Ninja's I suppose.

I own all of lastgen systems as of October 2008. (Finally got a Dreamcast)

I own every currentgen system except PS3.

Watched four episodes. Hated it beyond a descriptible level. One of the worst animes ever in my opinion, the characters were too damn annoying

The first 7 eipsode of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann are pretty weak, it gets WAY more epic once you get to episode 7.

Maybe, but then it's a bad anime if it takes 25% of the anime to actually start. Code Geass is awesome from the first second, for example.

Though, I doubt I'd be able to stand the characters in the "good" part anyway, the story could get better, given, but the character would still be damn annoying

I've seen it. It's okay, but not the best thing i've ever seen. Emotion-powered combat mechs seemed kinda cliche

Strange, since Eureka 7 is basically the same thing (with the emotion-powered mech thing), but that was one that really blew me away.

Both of them, however, are anime where the dub is superior.

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

Actually no, characters like Simon (the main character) become UBER awesome later on in the series. Also, I have to disagree, Code Geass took awhile for it to get good too.

WTF!!!! Eureka Seven sucks ass. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann is WAY better IMO.

First episode. "Lelouch vi Britannia orders you to commit suicide" "Yes, My Lord" (or something like that). I respectfully disagree

Yea Code Geass and Gurren Laggan share nothing in common beyond mechas and even then the mecha arent similar in any way.

TTGL is amazing and a good recommendation would be Needless. Its a fan service version of TTGL no mechas though.

*WARNING SPOILERS* *WARNING SPOILERS* *WARNING SPOILERS*

(This is mostly at Khan, but somewhat to g-value as well.) You didn't watch Eureka 7 close enough.  As with most of Bones work, you have to watch it several times to really pick up on stuff.  That said, even if you missed a lot of stuff, Eureka 7 is hardly "basically the same thing" as TTGL.

The similarities between the two shows are few and far between.  The bad guy that's made to look like pure evil early on isn't so black and white.  They use mechas which respond to the emotions of the characters (in very different ways).  There's a coming of age theme.  That's about it.

Eureka 7's emotional response idea is much more sophisticated and well developed.  It doesn't just respond to courage and hope, but is affected by the relationship between the pilots, their desires, etc.  The relationship between the planet and the people is important (almost a non-factor in TTGL); really it's a major theme.

I could keep going for a while.  But that's not really the point of this thread.  I'll just end with saying that Eureka 7's mecha surf, and that, of course, is animated by BONES which makes it amazing stuff to see.

*SPOILERS OVER*

On Topic: TTGL is more of a simplified Eureka 7 with fewer themes given more attention, and lots of epic transformations and upgrades.  For some people, they'll find that more enjoyable.  I enjoyed Eureka 7 more (it's one of my favorite anime of all time), but that's not to say I didn't enjoy TTGL either.
