The old 60Gb models had PS2 backward compatbility but these are hard to find.
Nor really interested in the Wii, we want something a bit more meaty and powerfull.

You should also know that playing online on the 360 is with costs while on the PS3 it isn't.

As someone else mentioned, the Xbox 360 was pretty much the only console with any good RPGs not too long ago. These days there are ports of some of those games coming out on the PS3 with additional content and the PS3 is getting a handful of its own exclusives like Demon's Souls (which is a WRPG by Japanese developers in case some moron told you differently).
I still happen to think that the Xbox 360 exclusive RPGs are the more interesting ones, and there are a lot of cross-platform RPGs coming out this generation, so yeah.
As for the racing stuff, there are a bunch of racing games out on both consoles, so I'm sure you'd find something to like either way. I'm not into racing games but the arguments about them sound really dumb to me because they are usually like "oh yeah well this game only has 600 cars but THAT GAME HAS 900" as if you are ever going to use more than ten of them.

Yeah, but what is it now? $35 for a year if you buy from certain retailers? It's not a big deal.

For me it would be a problem, because I'm more into playing RPGs offline while it's still important for me to play games sometimes online.
