Well, they only sold 500,000 of them LAST WEEK ALONE, and there's 55 million of them sold SO FAR, why in the hell would someone think it's a failure?

DS sales completely rape them. and besides, i think we can all agree that Nintendo makes the best handhelds and that job should remain solely with them.

Absolutely not. Having only one portable gaming device on the market is not good for the consumer or the developer in any way. There are things the PSP does far better than the DS does. I can play FFVII and FFVIII on my PSP, that alone makes it better than the DS.

In fairness, DS is perfectly capable of running games like FFVII and FFVIII.  If PSP didn't exist, maybe we'd have gotten new DS ports/localizations of them?

The DS is not capable of running FFVII or FFVIII. Even the DSi can't. The largest DS cart (currently 512mb) would only hold 1/3 of either of these games.

Oh, let's not forget to look at the numbers for PS2... it still sells today, and it's been in the market for over 10 years now. For you Nintendo fanboys, sales figures for DS is not there yet.

And it's not really a competition between Nintendo or Sony. Nitendo is targeting females with the DS and younger and casual gamers on the Wii, because they know hard core gamers are for Xbox360 or PS3. A comparison between the three would be like comparing Bottled Water to the rivalry between Pepsi and Coke.

I agree but don't forget that the wii fit was made pretty much for women.

FFVII/VIII are horribly bloated and unoptimized, and the actual game data (models, backgrounds, code, etc) for each is around 200MB iirc (and repeated per disc btw).  I've no doubt each could be squeezed into a 4Gbit card without too much trouble.

I'd like a citation for that. I don't doubt they could probably shrink it to half its original size (the PSP/PS3 versions of these are merely repackaged emulation software). The DS version would have to cut something, in which case I wouldn't buy that version.

I think they should approach the public with a mainstream Ds-like new psp...

Touchscreen and accelerometers are mandatory.
Then maybe some other nice adition and KEEP IT AFFORDABLE.

Lol, sorry but I just have to reply to this... You do know that while PS2 has sold around 134 million LTD in over a decade, DS is actually close to beating that with roughly 124 million sold LTD in around half that time (5 years)? ...Right?

It's hard to tell if this is really good or not. The DS should ultimately double PS2 sales if it want's to boast itself over the PS2. It's a handheld, whereas the PS2 was an expensive console. I wonder if the DS will even be selling 5 years from now.

Are you serious ? do you see the quality of games that the psp has ?
PATAPON/ KILLSONE:LIBERATION/ EXIT/ R&C:SIZE MATTERS/ HOT SHOT GOLF/ CRISIS CORE/ CRUSH/ PORTABLE OPPS, i can go on and on, and lets not talk about the amount of units the thing sell , hell japans numbers alone eclipse major console sales.... the ds may be the better selling handheld, but the psp has a fanbase of its own, ME INCLUDED.

No, I think there's plenty of room for one, but it needs to be very different from the home experience to separate the two. As it is, the PSP is basically a very watered-down console.

I agree with that part. At the end of the day though, they've sold a lot of them and presumably it's profitable so why abandon it? The bigger issue is game sales, outside of Japan anyway. For a system that's sold over 56 million units, the game sales are dire.

Game sales are an issue in Japan too... the PSP only has 3 million sellers in Japan, and they are all Monster Hunter games. Even the Wii is killing it in software in Japan.

You are quite confused. Much of that space is created because of the resolution the game was originally created to display in. When compressed down to the size of the DS's screens with the quality of the FMV in FFVII it would be less disc space than even the FFIV remake used, and significantly less than Dragon Quest IX.

Hell even completely uncompressed the game is only 1.32GBs on PSN. It would easily fit on a 512 DS cart with modern compression.
