Well, they only sold 500,000 of them LAST WEEK ALONE, and there's 55 million of them sold SO FAR, why in the hell would someone think it's a failure?

DS sales completely rape them. and besides, i think we can all agree that Nintendo makes the best handhelds and that job should remain solely with them.

Absolutely not. Having only one portable gaming device on the market is not good for the consumer or the developer in any way. There are things the PSP does far better than the DS does. I can play FFVII and FFVIII on my PSP, that alone makes it better than the DS.

In fairness, DS is perfectly capable of running games like FFVII and FFVIII.  If PSP didn't exist, maybe we'd have gotten new DS ports/localizations of them?

The DS is not capable of running FFVII or FFVIII. Even the DSi can't. The largest DS cart (currently 512mb) would only hold 1/3 of either of these games.

FFVII/VIII are horribly bloated and unoptimized, and the actual game data (models, backgrounds, code, etc) for each is around 200MB iirc (and repeated per disc btw).  I've no doubt each could be squeezed into a 4Gbit card without too much trouble.

I'd like a citation for that. I don't doubt they could probably shrink it to half its original size (the PSP/PS3 versions of these are merely repackaged emulation software). The DS version would have to cut something, in which case I wouldn't buy that version.
