Forums - Sony Discussion - Metal Gear Solid 4- Does anyone else think it's massively overrated?

IMHO is overrated too. Comparing it to the other 3 games of the saga I found it a little bit disappointing. One thing that caught my attention were the worthless bosses. They have no charisma and they have to do absolutely nothing with the plot (at least with it's core). They are a side effect of how the world turned to be.

But I still think it's a great game. IMO, you can find there one of the most epic moments of the saga, and that is a battle of war machines when you aproach to the end of chapter 4 (I don't mention it clearly in order to avoid spoilers). Wow, that was one of the peaks. It's near to giving death to "you-know-who" at the end of MGS3 by yourself pressing coldly the trigger. Or near figuring out that you have been cheated by "you-know-who" near the end of MGS1 (via codec and all that comes after that).

Proudest Platinums - BF: Bad Company, Killzone 2 , Battlefield 3 and GTA4

Nope. I enjoyed the game. There are plenty of other games that I think are much more overrated.

You came into a thread about a PS3 exclusive. And immediately call two 360 exclusive "massively overrated". I guess that little question you asked made it all better

Shall i make a thread asking the top 5 most overrated games this gen? And shall we see how many times Halo 3 and Gears come up? Do you really want me to? 'Cause i will... Just to prove a point.

And yes, asking him that question makes it an okay post, as it is on topic... And it would also help with understanding why he thinks it is overrated.

Now, when will you stop being hypocritical... And get on topic? Edit: Yey! Finally!...

Go ahead! ^_^

I will be the first one in there.

I'm going to stop posting in here, because we are just farther derailing the thread

Last year November I bought myself a brand new PS3 Slim. With the price drop and all those exclusives that only PS3 owners could enjoy I had to get one.

So I went on a shopping spree and bought pretty much all the highly rated exclusives. So far I have completed the following-

Resistence 1- Dated but if I played it back in 06 I think I would've enjoyed it a lot more.

Resistence 2- Big improvment, enjoyed this game. Is it over as I think it's a great series to carry on.

Killzone 2- Disappointed. Explained in some detail here. http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=97225&page=7

Uncharted- Wow I loved this game, really enjoyed it.

Uncharted 2- What an amazing game! Even better than the first! Everyone must expericance both games.

Right my candidate for the most overrated game ever-

Metal Gear Solid 4.... Now unless your a diehard MGS fan, I can't see how anyone could enjoy this to a great degree. I heard technically it's amazing and I guess back in 08 I would've been impressed a bit more but even so it's really not that greatThe sound effects are mediocre and only a couple of memorable tunes. The actual levels are very dull and uninspiring. Seems like all the work went into the characters which do look good (they have no jaggies unlike everything else). The women do look fit (I like Naomi). No screen tearing but constant frame rate hiccups. A lack of post processing effects too. Oh and the installs and loading that breaks up the flow of cut scenes...takes up nearly 6.5 gigs!

But that's not really the problem. My issue is (in order of bad to worse) story, gameplay and voice overs. I played it in English (is that the issue?) and it was like a step back to last gen or even before. Otacon has got be the worst VO I've heard in a long time and he's one of the main NPC. With a game practically based around the story (with bits of gameplay thrown in) I couldn't believe how bad the vo and narrative was. The pacing was way off, there were a lot of pointless cut scenes and it was confusing as hell with one convoluted plotline after another. I heard it was very sad but EVA's and Naomi's death were very poorly acted out with terrible dialogue and hearing Otacon cry just made me angry at how that could've made it into this game.

And gameplay? How archaic is it? Snakes moves like a piece of rock. Stealth? I could just just run and gun around the basic designed levels. I was so surpsied at how basic the level structure was. Enemies respawn, CQC was so basic ( I hardly needed to use it) as was the weapons upgrade. The bosses were mostly whack and the last fight with Liquid was the most basic beat em up I've ever played. Yes I've used the word basic a lot but that's what the gameplay is, it's almost like the gameplay was just thrown in as an after thought. The bike scene for example. All I had to do was hold down firing trigger with auto lock on. Still if the VO was any good I wouldn't mind but man it was so 1995 anime. Snake was the only character that was consistently good (I did feel bad for him) and I liked some of the humour in the game.

20+ hours of MGS4 out the way. Phew.

Now playing Valkryie Chronicles a game I am enjoying. I still have Little Big Planet, three Ratchet and Clank games and Infamous to complete

1. I am not a die hard MGS fan...i played part 2 when i was a kid and decided to pick up part 4 and loved it. I loved it for its graphical design, story, AMAZING gamplay, and AMAZING ending...this game taught me the difference between the BEST game and the FAVORITE game. it is not my favorite game, but it is sure the BEST game i have ever played.

2.back in 08, you wouldve blown your fucking socks off...its graphics are not the best, but its enviorment and counting the length of the game is amazing. IT takes up more than 30gigs of blueray space...and the tunes happen to be some of the best in the gaming industry, just because you dont like them doesnt mean they are "mediocre". the ending had the best music i have ever heard for a boss battle.

3.constant frame rate hiccups? no, only in some areas of the game...like the beginning where snake was in the middle of war...the hiccups were minor and not even hard to locate.

4.I agree with the VO, and some of the acting was off, but it does not ruin the experience.....you still get the full story and was not terrible

5.The bosses were some of the funnest bosses a game could have. fighting the octopus, the mantis (haha good times), even the wolf were all fun. and if you would play on the hardest diffulculty, you would know what a real stealth game was like. anyone can go on normal and rip shxt up with a p90, but you will NEVER do that on the extreme.

6. the bike scene was standard for a rail shooting action part....but it was more, it was working with big mama (lol), and to any mgs fan i am sure this was huge, (i for one wouldnt know, i haven played part 3). facing liquid at a high height with the amazing music and the beautiful sun was some of the most fun i ever had.

7.you make it sound like it was a chore to play the game...whether you like it or not it is a AAA, and if you didnt like it i get it, its your own opinion and i could care less, but saying all that you said feels like you did this to flame the game. the game is not overrated, it is fine, a 94 is what it deserves and even for a newcomer the game can bring great memories.

So someone is saying MGS4 doesnt have good music? Oh well.

MGS4 is a superb game, Over rated, Hell no, Under rated.

Overrated? Definitely, but a lot of games this gen are. I can't post my actual opinion about MGS4, though, because that's what led to the warning on my profile

As a child I played MGS 1-2 and dint understand them because i was a child in my early teens mgs3 but MGS4 is like a masterpiece if not for innovative game play but for a story that cannot be done twice.

I played the game once...

I can't play it again it emotionally got me as a unique game. So maybe that made people overlook game play but I've seen my friends play it who beat it in 5-8 hours and that's really intriguing to watch/play if you can.

So I will say it is a magical games that breaks all boundaries of formality.
