Forums - Sony Discussion - Why Dosen't Sony exploit their lossless sound compression in their games???

Well I understand that not everybody experiences gaming to the fullest effect but there are lot of people that do, Playing Socom in my setup I can hear people trying to sneak up on me from behind (footsteps or Switching/re-loading weapons), u can even hear them talk downstairs if your sniping in a 2 level building, its incredible the amount details that they are implementing in sound nowadays.

As a lot of people pointed out, not a lot of people have impressive sound systems. I'm the only person I know with a 7.1 setup. My parents have a 5.1 setup, but the video games aren't plugged into it. My uncle has a 5.1 system, but the 2 rear speakers aren't even in remotely the right area and he hasn't used it in years. They just use the TV speakers. Other than that I don't know anyone with a surround system. Also, most the surround systems I've seen posted on this website are the junky HTIB systems that you can pick up for a few hundred dollars. So, while the PS3 can handle 7.1 (which is part of the reason why I bought a 7.1 setup along with movies) advertising it will be of little benefit.

As for advertising blu-ray, everyone knows what it is now (thanks to advertising) and HDTV's are the popular thing to buy now (a lot more than decent surround systems) so a blu-ray player is the perfect addition. Why not advertise that this unit will be able to take advantage of that new expensive TV you just bought?

If you drop a PS3 right on top of a Wii, it would definitely defeat it. Not so sure about the Xbox360. - mancandy

Don't Know why there on fire but meh....

I've always been a sound buff. Eversince I was little, I've followed the next sound trend. Didn't like to game without the best possible sound. Then came along Dramcast, VGA output for games.. WHAT?!? Loved it!!! So the Dreamcast is dead.. what do you mean PS2/Gamecube/Xbox can't put out over VGA?! lost interest in gaming for a few years. HDTVs came out... Dude, Xbox graphics on HDTV pulled me back. Sure gamecube and PS2 can put out over component too, which wasn't really advertised and had to research to get the hookups. But Xbox always had the bettergraphics in multi-plat games. I became a sound and graphics whore. Always needed the best sound and video in movies and games.

Yet, to this day.. I'm the only one that cared about sound, among my friends and family.

Yes 7.1 is fucking great on the PS3, shooters sound amazing. Between graphics and sound the PS3 is an experience. It really shocked me that the Nintendo Wii, does not sopport dolby digital, or DTS, only pro logic. Thats PS1 and PS2 sound. Crazy.

Im really surprise, here in Quebec, Canada most person have 5.1. Its sure that living in a rich society must help those kind of things.

Weird. I'm am quite surprised too, I don't know if I know anyone who DOESN'T have a 5.1 surround system. All my gamer friends have HDTV's, but even people who don't game, or just have an SDTV still have 5.1 surround. And it isn't a new thing either, most people have had it for 3-5 years I would guess.

My tv sounds fine and i have no room for surround sound.

Yeah same here, even most non gamers have 5.1 (I remember 5 years ago that I and my friends already had that). Well sometime they dont use  the subwoofer but thats about it.
