I thought it was strange too that there were 2.4 M or so units on shelves somewhere, but now that I think about it, it makes a lot of sense. 360 really underperformed this season where every retailer probably thought they were going to break their previous year. So yeah, there probably is a huge stock pile in warehouses somewhere.

Not really a fair assumption to make since you have nothing to back it up. I disagree for the reasons that generally production line->consumer on most xboxes at the moment in the UK at least is around 2 months, check MFR dates of a sprinking of new xboxes and you will see that's roughly correct. The PS3 Slim sales boom occured in september onwards, it was obvious from the get go that sales were not going to be incredible for MS as opposed to xmas before from that time. My point in all this is, if there are 2.4 million consoles sitting around the average MFR date should be beginning of november!

Nothing to back what up exactly?

2.4M consoles is quite a lot to be in warehouse or in store. Ask anyone.

I know that I have no proof to say that stores expected it to sell more, but just going by the average estimation of people here and on the holiday season sales thread, it really underperformed compared to expectations.

I don't believe they have sold over 39 million units. They couldn't have, otherwise the xbox 360 would have outsold the playstation 3 on a monthly basis since the launch of the playstation 3 slim.

The key word is shipped, when MS says 39 "sold" that's strictly to all retailers WW.  I'm not sure of PS3's numbers at Sony's CES but they'd say the same thing like 33 or 34 PS3's have been sold which invariably mean shipped to retailers as well.

I guess ballmer stretched the truth about worldwide sales. When big bosses/employers talk about sales, they should talk about how many units they've sold to customers, not retailers. He should be ashamed for lying. Hes more intelligent than to deceive others for accumulative xbox 360 sales.

Ashamed? What are you talking about ? Sony, Ninty, and MS count the overall systems they sold as shipped since they only keep track of what they've "sold" to retailers because that's where all their sales go.  When he says 39 mil sold, it's taken as sold to retailers simple as that.  It's not a secret evil MS move, it's just business.  Why use the tracked estimates of companies like NPD, when you can give a fact stated by your shipping manufacters that you've sold 39 million 360's to retailers WW?

So are you saying that vgchartz is wrong about xbox 360 sales being less than 29 million worldwide?

(insert random MS/Sony/Nintendo exec name): "We're some FKN(etwork) liars."

Perfect person made this thread.

I can't stand execs from any of the companies. They strive on deception. They always have.

You mean 39 mil WW? While I do think vgchartz numbers for it are low for 360 by the numbers we got at CES, it's not because it's less than 39 mil.  VGChartz gives estimates sold to retailers but MS gives definite numbers from what they've sold to retailers.  So subtract 39 mil from VGC's 360 numbers and you'll have about 2.2 mil which means that's how many they (VGChartz) believe are in retailers' inventory worldwide.  What some are questioning is if that difference of retailer inventory was less than 2 million during the holidays, then why would retailers have a bigger stock of it after.  While the answer seems clear that VGC's numbers are closed, there's also a few other variables that can be considered that VGC's numbers could (strong could) be pretty dead on with 360 numbers such as 360 not having a strong holiday as expected so they're backlogged and so on and so on.

EXACTAMUNDO

Whats the point in getting worked up over a comment made not 3 weeks out from their financial report? Once we have those shipped numbers written down officially and the Christmas clutter behind us we can then and only then make an assessment about the relative position of the Xbox 360.

39m sounds about right. It means they've had orders for 39m xboxs from retail not 39m sold to consumers. Sony will likely be at 33, 34 million.

"That is 39 million sold to venders meaning there is about 2.42m sitting on shelves."
That's said.
