Forums - Microsoft Discussion - Natal Runs at 30 Frames Per Second

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Microsoft dedicated a significant portion of its keynote address to Project Natal. A 3D camera, the controller-free gaming device will be coming out before 2010 ends during the holiday time frame. Perhaps more interesting were the stats offered during a trailer shown at the conference.

Andrew Fitzgibbon, Principal Researcher for Microsoft Research, discussed the specifics. "What Natal does, is it evaluates effectively trillions of body configurations every frame. We've made it do that 30 times a second." This is done through a combination of software and a camera that tracks the body's motion in three dimensions.

Though Natal will evaluate the room 30 times a second, that does not necessarily mean that the games will also run at that rate. That will be the effective number of times the game can receive new input from the user, however.

Misleading thread title FTL... makes it seem like Natal-specific software runs at 30 fps

nightdragon, no it does not..

isn't a higher amount of FPS needed? I heard something about that on 3D TV.. or was that about Refresh rates?

Currently playing: MAG, Heavy Rain, Infamous

Getting Plat trophies for: Heavy Rain, Infamous, RE5,  Burnout and GOW collection once I get it.

Refresh rates and frames per second are 2 completely different things.  And the thread title IS misleading (as is the title of the article that OP copied from IGN) because it implies that Natal software is limited to running at 30 fps when this is in fact not true... and conveniently that notion is only clarified in the last line of the article.

so ifthe hardware can only run at 30 frames per second....(which is what i thought when i read the tittel, there is nothing wrong there)
the surely the games can only run at that or less?

So that means that Sony Playstation Eye > Natal ?!?!?

The next-generation version of the EyeToy can record VGA-quality video at 60 frames per second, but Sony's still mum on an exact price or release date.

Sony announced that its Eye camera/microphone accessory for the PlayStation 3 will be hitting store shelves this summer. The Eye comes as a follow up to Sony's EyeToy, which was released for the Playstation 2. The Eye features a USB camera that can record up to 120 frames per second with a resolutions of 320 by 240, or at 60 fps at VGA resolution. According to Sony, these frame rates will ensure smooth footage, and we'd tend to agree, though we'd love to see a higher pixel count, something in the HD range. The camera also features a low-light option and a two position zoom lens that can capture close-ups and wider-angle full body shots.

Why does someone named Solid Snake who only plays games on Playstations and the PC always makes 360 topics that try to be neutral but hint to something else. No, I don't really need an answer to that it was a rhetorical question.

Games can still run at 60 FPS but input can only be made every 2nd frame. Really though does it matter? Most games run at 30 FPS anyway.
