Forums - Nintendo Discussion - MWR: the core market didnt shift

Well the whole "M rating" intolerance of Wii owners is a bunch of bull that people have latched onto. It's actually a cop out not a formidable defense. M rated games will sell on the platform, but developers have to give the buyers a reason to get them. They just aren't going to see the M rating and purchase just like they aren't going to see the M rating and not purchase.

Take the Cabela's 2010 game on Wii. Game was a perfect fit. Hunting game, came packaged with the rifle to better immerse the game, good pricing, and a large marketing campaign focusing on its core features. Beautifully done and Activision is seeing huge sales because of it. Game could have been rated M and sales would probably still the same.

Publishers need to learn from Activision there or Nintendo in general. If you want a game to sell you have to actually sell it. Especially with Wii which has a lot of competition for shelf space. You have give a reason for them to pick this title up, explain the features, hype it up before hand, and the advertise them quite well. Do that and the userbase will start to show. That's how Nintendo can polarize almost 10 million buyers to pick up a Mario game and sell to 1/6 of a userbase in less than 10 weeks. 3rd parties may not be able to accomplish that but that is something they should seek to mimic.

Of course it always come down to how much are you willing to spend. If you aren't willing to take the risk then you can't really complain. Not to mention if they aren't spending money on marketing it's hard to think they spent much on the game meaning some of these sales should make them quite profitable anyways. But if they want a breakout success they need to first make a quality title that has good features, hype those features up, then sell those features in the marketing.

Its scaled with the increase in Wii numbers then, or has it remained on par with the old WaW attach?

It doesn't work that way. Gears 2 sold less than Gears 1. Guess which was sold when there were more 360s sold. Same with Resistance 2 versus Resistance 1 on the PS3.

All correct, except for the bolded word. It should be "galvanized". To polarize a bunch of people is to split them.

You guys realize that being a 2-year-old port is not really a big deal, considering that both this game and WaW would obviously be purchased on another platform, if it were available. Its not old if it wasn't available, no matter how long the wait.

Actually, I bet several people would take the Wii version over the HD versions if they were both available.

For MW, I would take the Wii version over the HD version any day.  Yes, the graphics are inferior, but the controls are just that much better on the Wii.  It is quite telling when I am playing MW2 (on my buddies Xbox) that I wish it had Wii controls (I also had this problem with RE5-- the game would be so much better with Wii controls).

same here on both those games

For FPS I would take the Wii for sure. But DA has its genres too.

Of course the Wiimote doesnt improve all games and sometimes you feel like playing with a regular controller.

@Ail: MW is a big seller and MW2 is even bigger, but it is a mainstream game not simply a core one. The core market is a bit of an illusion really. Many people that buy the big 'core' IPs are casual players that will drift away from gaming. There is such a thing as a teen and 20 year old casual market. They might not buy Wii Fit but they do buy GTA and COD.

Some of those casual players are playing in a non casual way then.

I've spent around 6 hours playing MW2 online.

I'm ranked 4 millionth on the PSN leaderboard ( and MW2 has only sold like 5.4 million units on the PS3 so far)

That is a lot of players that spent hella lot of time online .....

The thing I wanted to point out is that since last year HD console ownership increased and as a result MW2 sales are beating CoD4.
Wii ownership increased too ( and Reflex may not have gotten advertising but everything CoD related is getting a lot of indirect advertising with MW2) but Reflex sales aren't doing a lot better than WaW, so there isn't much reason to rejoice...

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

You mean a two-year-old, second-rate port didn't expand the Wii's core market? Gasp! Shock!

I think the sales of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories are more telling. That game pulled 100k in America in three weeks, while its sister game (Homecoming) sold only 200k lifetime in the same territory on the 360. And Shattered Memories is even more of a niche title than Homecoming.

It's said in every thread like this, so I'll say it here first: Core games sell on the Wii if they're what the core market wants. The core market doesn't want more rail shooters or half-arsed ports; it wants games like SH:SM.

And let's not forget that Silent Hill had 0 advertising (correct me if I'm wrong), and few copies were sent.

plus homecoming was advertised, remember the silent hill producer claiming wii owners not being silent hill's audience, guess he was wrong.

amazing how quality matters with wii games.

World at War didn't follow 4 on the Wii, so we aren't going to stop rejoicing because of your spin.

@ taking the Wii version over the HD version. Lol. Have you guys played both?

The Wii version is nice for the Wii. But taking it over the HD version? The controls just aren't that good guys. I can't help but notice a couple folks who said that don't actually own a HD console. I suppose, if you've got a SD TV, maybe that comment has some merit. I think you'd be hard pressed to find HD TV/HD console owners who would agree, however.

I am one of those and yes i have a 360 (my third one even) and playing on a hdtv but the controlls alone makes the wii version superior to me.
