Forums - Gaming Discussion - Which Games Totally Blew You Away/ Delivered The Goods?

Going back....
Super C (NES) because that is the earliest game I remember playing in my life. Watching my older brother play co-op was a new and 'bonding' experience.

No Mercy- Best wrestling game ever. It had supreme customization, great storylines, and I loved the artstyle at the time. People were stealing copies of it around the neighborhood!

Goldeneye- Awesome shooting game. This and No Mercy are the reason I had 7 boys from the neighborhood fightin over controllers every other day. Halo 1 later brought on the same appeal.  Small honorable mention to Bomberman 64

Star Fox 64- first I hated it. Then a few years later, the one-liners, secrets, and replayability made it one of my favorite games of all-time

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time-I cannot describe enough how deeply that game affected my life. I was only like 7 years old, the age where you just learn right from wrong, and this game just captivated me in every way. I recently asked my family about it and my cousins and even my mom said I was obsessed with it. It is why its my favorite game of all-time, possibly forever.

Azure Dreams (PS1)- The random tower and the wealth of things you could do made me go back and forth from my neighbors house every other day playing it. Brilliant game, but Gamespot only gave it 7.3...Pfft. wTF....

Syphon Filter- pretty much my first Third Person Shooter I think. Great game, never surpassed by its sequels either. Driver 2 gets a slight honorable mention.

Shenmue- when people watch it, it is the most boring game ever. Playing it, it is one of the greatest. I tried buying it once, left my Dreamcast disc tray opened once my older brother arrived with the copy. Gamestop said they only had one of 2 CDs and he didn't get it (Huge Disappointment for a kid)

Legend of Dragoon/Final Fantasy 7- two RPGs I loved. I remember playing the LOD demo and wanting to buy it so badly, and I eventually got it, but the fourth CD scratched and I couldn't finish it (Huge Disappointment for a kid LOL) Same thing happened with FF7. Took at least 9 years to track down FF7 and finish it, which I did by beating the Weapons last november.

Super Smash Bros. Melee- another uniting and extremely competitive fighting game. Had all the kids over for it. Imagine, losers get banned from my house lol We were playing for more than fun back then lol

Grand Theft Auto- played 1 on the PC and 2 on the PS1 and didn't feel them. But GTA3 was bananas. I could still hear that Agallah song bumpin in the Banshee. My favorite GTA from beginning to end. Loved the protagonist and environment. My great love for GTA3 fuels my complete hatred for GTA4.

Resident Evil 4- my brother beat it, I beat it, then my oldest brother completed the game. Watching him beat the game reminded how much of a classic it is. 9.8 Masterpiece. Honorable mention to RE1 (GC), for showing me true survival horror. I avoided that game for 5 years because I was too scared lol

Shadows of the Colossus- all I can say is 9.9 Masterpiece, The Epitome of Immersion. I mean this game literally took my breath away after every boss battle. When you can make me feel sad for killing a boss, you are doing something exceptionally right. Honorable mention to Metal Gear Solid 3 lol

God of War 1 & 2- violence in a whole other level. Brutal but fun.

Gears of War series- same appeal as God of War, but multiplayer and worse story haha

Nothing else from this gen has been good except for New Super Mario Bros. Wii and No More Heroes for its quirkiness

Wow, im very impressed, you guys listed some truly amazing games, i feel almost no need to post my opinion.

Tagged for later though. i have a few to share.

Classic Adventure
Battlezone
Elite
Doom
Ultima Underworld 2
Tie Fighter
System Shock 1 & 2
The Thief Series
Deus Ex
Grim Fandango
Half Life 1 & 2
ICO
Shadow of the Colossus
Splinter Cell
Silent Hill 2
Call of Cthulhu - Dark Corners of the Earth
Portal
STALKER
Oblivion & Fallout 3
Uncharted 2

Some are buggy, but all had at least one element, mission or 'feel' to them that made me sense just how amazing the videogame format could be. I'm sure I could think of more, and a whole generation of console games I never indulged in at all - for those amazed at lack of Zelda, Mario, etc.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Tales of symphonia-favorite rpg
super mario bros 3-favorite patformer
okami-just awesome
fallout 3- goody

MGS4 - the cinematography, the narrative, the raw emotion, the nostalgy, it blew me away completely. There were a couple of moments that made me actually get up from my chair in excitement, which was (almost) a premiere for me (the ending of The Game - 1997 thriller - had a somewhat similar effect on me, though not as intense).

Each past MGS game can also be an example of complete delivery on all fronts (hope the upcoming ones will as well).

These are the only games that, for me, trully delivered.

1.  Peggle: (it changes your life and totally blows you away) Your life won't be the same after you play, recommend or mention this game. Its influence exceeds the boundaries of the gameplay; it impacts your personal environment like no other game does.

Fixed. Sorry if you're bothered by my insistence, but I had to do it.

- Soli Deo Gloria -

The FUTURE is the FUTURE. Now... B_E_L_I_E_V_E!

Sonic-
Being from Europe we were more exposed to Sega than Nintendo and when I first saw the Mega Drive version of Sonic after having played the Master System version to death I was totally gobsmacked at how much superior it was technically.

Street Fighter-
To me as a kid SF was just the coolest game with uber cool moves and characters.

Virtua Fighter-
This was the first time I experianced incredibly fluid 'life like' animation in 3D so that blew me away.

Mortal Kombat-
Again as a kid I thought the gore, digitised sprites, music and characters were just awesome.

Donkey Kong-
The game that made me ask myself- "Surely the SNES cannot possibly be capable of producing such astonishing graphics and sound!"

Streets of Rage-
I think you can see a trend developing here. Anything with cool characters with cool special moves bashing up others just looked amazing in my eyes. I loved side scrolling beat em ups and I can thank SoR for that.

Super Mario World-
Possibly the best platforming game I have ever played to this day.

Super Mario Kart-
The most multiplayer fun I've ever had. Ever.

Sega Rally-
I remember me and a childhood friend having dozens of hours of fun racing each other with slower car boost turned on.

NiGHTS Into Dreams-
The first time I got used to controlling Nights was amazing. The most dreamy like game I've ever played with an A Life system yet to be bettered.

Super Mario 64-
3D platforming had arrived....and yet to be bettered. What a magical game.

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time-
Perhaps my favourite game of all time.

Grandia 2-
Didn't play JRPGs before and this game showed me what I've been missing. Loved everything about it.

Shenmue-
Wow what an amazing technical accomplishment I loved living in Ryo's world and throwing myself into his quest to avenge his father.

Halo-
Never was into FPS too much but Halo showed me that all I had to do was get used to the controls and then soak myself into a wicked Sci Fi universe and fight like a super soldier.

I haven't bothered with anything this gen as it's still ongoing but special mention must go out to Half Life, Mass Effect and Uncharted.
