God of War has never been a system seller....

thats what they said about uncharted

And they're right.  Dude Raider 2 may be a critical darling, but it's sales are hardly impressive for a hyped-to-hell prestige AAA 1st party product.  Expect the same for GOW3.

Raider 2? No no no, Uncharted 2, big difference. And why does Uncharted 2's sales not impress? That makes absolutely no logical sense... First off, the game has been out for only 10-11 weeks. How much software has it sold in that time frame? Ending Christmas week, it should pull in over 2.5 million units sold. Again, that's only in 10 weeks. When has that number ever been unimpressive? I'm at a loss for words here...

Now, only 1% of video game series do better than that sales wise. If a game doesn't have the words Wii, Halo, Mario, Zelda, Gears of War, Call of Duty, or Gran Turismo on the front of the box, it simply won't sell 6+ million. Why is Uncharted being held to a grossly high benchmark?

When you take into account current sales, GOTY editions, price cuts, Bundles and future interest in the game, Uncharted 2 could very well sell 4.5-5 million copies. Also take into account that the franchise is only on the second game. Is that not impressive?

In regards to Uncharted 2 not being a system seller... http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=6079

You can clearly see that people bought a ps3 simply for Uncharted 2. It may be only a spike, but a system seller nonetheless.

yeah, but no one can say that uncharted didnt move systems, it did http://news.vgchartz.com/news.php?id=6079 and so will gowIII, quote me on that

Overtracked.  By a lot, nearly 2:1 versus NPD.  Though in fairness, the NPD numbers don't include the 250GB bundle.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I think Uncharted 2's sales are fine (and a decent improvement over the first game).  But it's just not a killer app or system seller, it's not pushing the sorts of numbers to really qualify it to that level.  I'd say we're looking at a ceiling closer to 4m though.

But aren't the sales still impressive? I don't know about you, but the majority of predictions on vgchartz had U2 selling roughly 2-3 million when everything was said and done. The game has absolutely smashed those predictions in a mere 10 weeks.
In regards to killer apps... few games really have that kind of impression. It takes a combination of things to create such a product. Most importantly, the game needs to release at the beginning of a generation. It's a product that must be heavily sought after and create a need for many to purchase a console. U2 simply released too far into this generation to be a major system seller. But that's not to say that Uncharted 2 did not directly move some consoles (as shown in my previous link).

Did it move a huge amount of systems upfront? Enough to be labeled a 'killer app'? No. But then again, nobody said it would...

if MS lowers the arcade to 149 or lower, then ps3 will never have a chance to pass it. if they don't, still won't pass it, but just not in 2010.

To be honest, sales aren't all that impressive given it's likely the hardest push PS3 release post slim launch (both by Sony and the industry media).  650k for it's first 2 months NPD ltd is pretty meh, that's like a 2nd tier Microsoft series (Fable, Forza, etc).  Even Halo Wars did better iirc.

It's impressive compared to the first though (which flopped upfront, then crawled to decent sales through price slashing and bundles).

I agree with you on the great year for us gamers part.

The PS3 sales will pass the 360 sales about 6 months after MS releases the next x-box, whenever that is.

2010 , the year that XBOX 360 will be dominance again!!!

I would like the people who voted "Hell Yeah" to type their names in this thread. So when 2010 passes with the XBox 360 still ahead of the PS3 they can eat crow. "Ya want salt with da crow?"
Last year the 360 fans including myself were claiming the 360 would be 9 or 10 million in front of PS3 by end of 2009. The gap was only 5.3 million or something due to PS3 late rally.
360 with Natal and price cuts of its own will rally in sales in the final quarter for 2010. Very likely the PS3 prices will remain unchange. I believe the XBox 360 will erase the first half gains the PS3 makes in 2010 with late sales rush due to lower sales prices and Natal effect. De ja vu'.
2011 or 2012 may be the year PS3 overtakes the 360 in worldwide sales. It may or may not even happen.
Exclusive games will not have a huge impact on system sales maybe 2 or 3 weeks and then back to normal sales. PS3 is in its fourth year. 360 is in its fifth year. Only price cuts and something really special can help give system sales a prolonged boost.
