Forums - Sales - Average sales for indie computer games

Hi,

I'm looking for an estimation of how much you can sale an indie game on computers (Windows + mac + linux) through online distribution (personnal website, steam, bigFish, ...).

I perfecly understand that the number will dramatically change from one game to another but is it closer to 1000 units ? 20000 units ? less ? more ?

I know for big indie games like World of goo or Braid. But what for the modest ones ??

Thanks

Charlie

DD numbers are usually pretty hard to come across.  The closest thing I can think of to what you'd want is that Garry's Mod has sold around 390k on steam as of October.

do we also have any estimate of PSN n XBL titles?

Yeah I saw Garry Mods sales too, that's impressive.
But once again, it's a really successful game. What about average games ? (like Osmos) (ok it's not completely average but you know what I mean :))

Noobie, you will find charts for xbl by searching "sales xbla" on vgchartz. But please, stay focus on computer sales in this topic.

If you are just referring to self published, then I would think that its nearly impossible to find reliable numbers. On the other hand, if you are thinking of games published by one of the indie publishers, then try looking at their websites; companies like Garage Games like to make a big deal about what the high end is for games they've published.

If we admit that sales are quite equals on wiiware, xbla & psn (we are estimated so let's say it's equal).
Do you think that computer sales are on the same level or clearly behind ?
Actually, I think it could be ok. After all, sales for world of goo are 50/60% Wiiware. So it's good for computer too. Isn't it ??

I'd say it depends on the game.  Some games are bound to do better on PC, such as an FPS, RTS or Adventure title (which have all tried their hands on stuff like WiiWare and XBLA, but sold mediocre).  But other titles, such as platformers, mini games and puzzle titles might get mixed results on Steam or shareware but might do REALLY well on WiiWare/XBLA.  Which is why the majority of the games you see on those services are those genres.
