I thought this was a reimagining (or update, not sure) of Castlevania: The Adventure for Game Boy? Can anyone clarify?

Yup yup, it's a remake of the Game Boy game but if you played the GB game you will notice that this remake seems to be a very different game.

Here is a source to confirm:

In theory, but not in function.  The "game" itself is 100% new, though it recycles the plot from CVTA.

i've been playing this for a while now, not quite finished but as a big castlevania fan i'm impressed. I do prefer it to be harder but it's not too easy. There is a hard mode, and you can play with the classic castlevania style where you can't control your jumping and get knocked back. This is why i love wiiware, it's reason enough by itself for me to own a wii.

currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X

Aw man. I forgot about the Rebirth games. Now I need to get some more Wii points.

"Now, a fun game should always be easy to understand - you should be able to take one look at it and know what you have to do straight away. It should be so well constructed that you can tell at a glance what your goal is and, even if you don’t succeed, you’ll blame yourself rather than the game. Moreover, the people standing around watching the game have also got to be able to enjoy it." - Shiggy

Thanks for the impressions. I've never played much Castlevania, so I wondered if this might be a good point to jump into the series.

I grabbed one of the DS games, but I'm not going to play it until I get around to sending in my DS to get the R button fixed.

Which DS game?

@Jumpin:

Well, I think you just made a sale for Konami

Dawn of Sorrow. I saw it used for a great price.

installed the game today, i thought it was rlly good. Konami's Rebirth series have been pretty good so far, can't wait for metal gear rebirth

KONAMI for gawds sake bring back the diagonal whip shots. No castlevania has felt "right" after playing castlevania 4 on the snes and I have tried the PSX, DS incarnations. Jumping and only being able to use your whip in a straight line is sooo annoying!!!

"Hey, Steve, just because you broke into Xerox's house before I did and took the TV doesn't mean I can't go in later and take the stereo." - Bill Gates (Microsoft Corporation)

Bill Gates had Mac prototypes to work from, and he was known to be obsessed with trying to make Windows as good as SAND (Steve's Amazing New Device), as a Microsoft exec named it. It was the Mac that Microsoft took for its blueprint on how to make a GUI.

""Windows [n.] - A thirty-two bit extension and GUI shell to a sixteen bit patch to an eight bit operating system originally coded for a four bit microprocessor and sold by a two-bit company that can't stand one bit of competition.""

Thanks for the impressions. I mean to download this last night but I can't put Muramasa down.

Classic Castlevania is so much better than Metrovania.

Next up is likely Salamder Rebirth going by Konami's JP trademarks.  I'm sure in time we'll see Metal Gear though, and probably a ton of other stuff (Parodius, Twinbee, Goemon, etc).

Make or break question: Can you use the whip diagonally?

Nope.  It's the same as the best Castlevanias (Dracula's Curse, Rondo of Blood).  The game is slavishly oldschool, but still somehow newschool friendly, just like the other WiiWare ReBirths (Gradius & Contra).  M2 really are the masters of this sort of thing.
