Forums - Sales Discussion - Average Sales Pace Of The Big Three

I had a close look at the sales of this generation's home consoles according to VGChartz data to compare their average weekly numbers.
I found this particularly interesting because there are huge differences between the consoles' release dates in the three big different regions. For example, the PS3 was out 68 weeks after the 360 in Europe, which is a strong region for Sony.

Personally, I believe that these "sales pace" numbers show quite well how the consoles have performed so far compared to each other. It's funny to see the numbers from another perspective not just looking at the total sales.

I thought I'd share this with anyone interested:

AMERICA: Wii>360>PS3

360
November 22nd, 2005    211w        20,655,000        97,890/week

So this means that if the PS3 released at the same time in Others as in America and Japan,
total PS3 sales would be at around 1.5-2M more.. interesting

^Not by that much... the reason Sony delayed the PAL release was because they were having trouble manufacturing them.... had it launched earlier in Europe it would have had a smaller 1st & 2bd week.

nice charts.
You should throw a ps2 one in there for good measure.

How high would Wii be if released alongside 360 as well? Would it be past 360 and PS3 (launched aligned) combined?

Yes. You just need to add up the averages.

Interesting. For additional entertainment, you can also tabulate the average software sales per week per console (which is something like 2*tie ratio/weeks) and gives:

AMERICA: PS3>360>Wii

360
November 22nd, 2005    211w        10.73       0.102/(console*week)
PS3
November 17th, 2006    161w        8.45         0.105/(console*week)
Wii
November 19th, 2006    161w        8.11         0.101/(console*week)

TOTAL OTHERS: PS3>Wii>360

360
December 2nd, 2005    210w        5.57        0.053/(console*week)
PS3
March 23rd, 2007         142w        5.65        0.080/(console*week)
Wii
December 8th, 2006    158w         5.42        0.069/(console*week)

JAPAN: Wii>360>PS3

360
December 10th, 2005    209w        4.88        0.047/(console*week)
PS3
November 11th, 2006    162w        3.64        0.045/(console*week)
Wii
December 2nd, 2006     159w        4.19        0.053/(console*week)

As you can see America and Japan are very homogeneous on this parameter, whereas in Others there are more marked differences. Of course I'm completely ignoring the bundle issue, make of these numbers what you want.

Great stuff. Find it very interesting that no matter the console the game sales numbers are all quite close on average per week. Looks great for all involved.

I also love these types of data comparisons, keep up the good work!

@WereKitten

Haven't you calculated wrong?
I mean, let's say for 360 in America..
If you divide that 10.73 tie ratio with 211 weeks, you get 0.051/(console*week) right?

Or what?
