Hopefully it lets you choose what server like WoW does.  Having to pay Gil for that thing in 11 pissed me off ;)

Frankly, I haven't seen anything from preview videos to make me think FFXIV will be any different than FFXI. Aside from the graphical upgrade and a new story. And well...I play RPGs for everything but those two things. Especially MMORPGs.

So, for me, I'll be holding out for Star Wars: The Old Republic. A game that actually looks like its not only doing something different from WoW, but trying to change MMORPGs as a whole.  And that's from the gameplay and exploration side of things, what I look for in an RPG.

That's odd, FF14's "leveling" system is nothing like FF11 at all. In FF14, you don't actually choose a class, your gear gives you stats and skills and abilities. So if you wear black mage gear, you can cast black magic. You can change your gear at any point, and thus change your class at any point, you just need to have the gear on you. Exact details are unknown.

Also, you don't actually level up. I think your gear might level up the more you use it, but your character itself doesn't gain experience. Again, exact details are unknown.

FF14 as an MMO will be VERY different than the standard WoW/EQ clones.

As to SW:TOR, I have high hopes for that game as well, but it looks completely like an EQ clone. Don't get me wrong, I don't think that's a bad thing per se, but in terms of gameplay, it doesn't look like anything unique. There seems to be some sort of choice in terms of dialogue which is cool. Not sure how that would really work in an MMO but we'll see.

So I'm not sure where you're coming from. SW:TOR seems FAR more story based than FF14 considering your character's story is a central part of the gameplay. Essentially, quests are either story quests or non-story quests, and there's a focus (from the forum-goers) on the difference between the two.

I don't see how Star War: The Old Republic is going to be like Everquest in the slightest.  Perhaps you're mixing it up with Star Wars Galaxies, which was built by the everquest team and was exactly what you're talking about.  As for my comments about Star Wars: The Old Republic 'break the mold of MMORPGs', I was talking about gameplay wise.  In terms of how your characters levels, how you fights, etc.  All of which look completely different than any other MMO that has come out since.

And as for FFXIV, the gaining abilities from gear and stuff I knew about, but that's pretty much taken from the FFTactics series.  I'm not going to say they won't improve it, but its still not exactly original.  As for other aspects of its gameplay, such as how your character fights and interacts with other players, it still looks pretty much the same as in FFXI.  At least all the fottage I've seen.

The abilities through gear is NOTHING like the FFTA series (and it was FF9 that was first with that thing). In FFTA 1,2 and FF9, you gain something like SP which will go towards your character learning abilities off of gear and mastering it. It's not like that whatsoever in FF14. You don't master abilities that you can then use with the gear off. You can only use whatever abilities are on the gear you have equipped, and it looks like the gear itself can level up (unsure about this, but from the way they described stuff, there's something like this going on). Or maybe, gears have a class, and you can rank up in a class of gear. As in, the more you use black mage gear, the better you more you get out of all black mage gear. You don't master any skills though. It's different enough to say there's little comparison between that and the FFTA system.

And I'm not sure what gameplay things you're expecting in SW:TOR, but it's regarded as a tab-targetting MMO. As in, press tab, press 12341234, tab, 12341234, etc. It's a very EQ-clone style of combat. Do you frequent the forums over there? I check them every once in a while for changes, and watch the trailers, which also show it to be a standard MMO combat style. So I'm not sure about what you think is new in terms of gameplay.

A small thread about the tab-targetting: http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=120584

And the leveling is normal. Do quests, kill stuff, level up. There's little knowledge about skill tress or the like, but I doubt it'll be anything unique. The game will still be good, but I'm not expecting some king of revolution in the MMORPG genre from the game.

FF14 is a FAR more unique MMO at this stage. We won't know until they're released, but all information that's been released so far points to that. I'm pumped about both, but I'm really curious to where you're getting your information on all of this.

First of all, one feature doesn't make it exactly like Everquest.  Even if it had 'tab targetting', which is not set in stone yet, that still doesn't make the game 'like everquest'.  As I said before, Star Wars Galaxies was the 'Everquest' styled game in nearly every way.  Right down to the way you equipped items and the environment.  Because, hey, it was made by much ofthe Everquest development team.

Second of all, there's many more reasons I'm saying Star Wars: The Old Republic is looking more unique.  But to go into those would really start turning this into a thread about that. Suffice to say, it goes into the combat engine being more action oriented and not having a traditional leveling system (story choices determine how you level) among other things.
