It may sound strange, but, they sold the console with huge losses at the start and still selling like this. And the ratio of software/acessories haven't make up this loss yet, if ever will, and if they sold more consoles the losses would be even higher and with the same ratio of software/acessories the things would be much worse.

So, PS3 had to be in the last position for many time, til they could sell the console with at least less loss and then make a come back.

Actually if PS3 would have sold like Wii at the beginning Sony would be totally broken =D Because even now they made billions of losses with dissapointing hardware sales.

It's an odd kind of logic, but Sony all else equal you would be correct, but of course b/c there are two other HW companies giving good competition, sony has had to sell the PS3 on a loss, in order to be in the race at all. If it was the only company, it wouldn't have had to do that.

Rol summed it up pretty much, had the PS3 sold like the Wii then it wouldn't have needed price cuts and hence would have been profitable before now. It might have still lost some money bu would be close to overall profitability by now instead of a long way away.

Winning the console sales war is the only thing that matters. If PS3 was in the Wii's current position. It would be a different ball game.
