Forums - Microsoft Discussion - For all the PS3 and PC owners that complain about 360 "console" exclusives

Many funny, mis-informed posts about PC gaming here. For the record, I play from my livingroom couch on a 1080p TV with my gaming PC. I also use a 360 control pad. Or mouse and keyboard. Or both. I've played Gears on my PC with a pad, and L4D2, and Fallout 3. By comparison, I used mouse and keyboard for Mass Effect (it was much better). Again, all from my sofa.

And Torchlight worked perfectly on my PC, unsurprisingly.

So, when you want to read email on your gaming PC, do you order everyone out of the living room so they don't invade your privacy?

Not if you want to proudly display some awesome pixtures, jokes, or videos people in my family seem to like to send back and forth.

Any serious gamer would own both HD consoles. I don't bother with PC, my Acer Aspire 6530G which cost more than my Elite and Slim combined can barely play any newish game at a decent graphical setting. I'd gladely play Mass Effect 2 on my 360 + leather couch + HD TV + 5.1 surround sound than slouching over a keyboard sitting a 1 feet away from the monitor. The experiance is just not the same.

Probably cause you bought a freaking Acer Aspire. You can't damn a gaming platform because of your inability to make informed purchase decisions.

Also it's really not hard at all to connect a computer to a TV and use a wireless keyboard and mouse or gamepad to experience the game the exact same way you would with your consoles but with much higher resolution and better graphics. Seriously a toddler can do it. If you can hook your consoles up to your TV you can hook your PC up.

I didn't buy the laptop to game but seriously for that kind of money I would've expected it to at least match 2005/06 console specs. The only thing it's lacking is a decent graphics card but being a laptop they are not as simple to upgrade. Also I'm talking costs here too. Yeah I can fork out hundreds of more pounds for extra accessories, have a big ass tower, printer, scanner etc next to my TV with loads of wires cluttering the place up or I can fork out more and go completely wireless....no a toddler can't do all that, it's a big waste of time and money, needs upgrading every six months, needs TLC (disk defragmenting, virus scans, downloading and installing updates etc etc). Count me out. PC's are great for strategy and MMORPG but for everything else I'd rather a dedicated gaming platform. I have tons of console exclusives that I'd much rather play over PC exclusives and even if they did come out on PC, it would take a monster Alienware esque PC to run it.

I wasn't going to highlight any individual posts, but the above deserves to be ridiculed for what it is: nonsense. To tackle the individual points:

'I didn't buy the laptop to game but seriously for that kind of money I would've expected it to at least match 2005/06 console specs.'

Rubbish. Laptops are not costed according to how good they are at playing games -- just because a machine is, or is not, expensive has no direct corrolation to how well it will play games. Of course, a gaming laptop may cost a lot; then again, my gaming laptop was very cheap.

'The only thing it's lacking is a decent graphics card but being a laptop they are not as simple to upgrade.'

As well say: my laptop is not a good gaming laptop. If it's lacking a decent graphics card, it's next to useless. Play minesweeper. Or a text adventure. Or buy a better laptop next time.

'Yeah I can fork out hundreds of more pounds for extra accessories, have a big ass tower, printer, scanner etc next to my TV with loads of wires cluttering the place up or I can fork out more and go completely wireless....no a toddler can't do all that, it's a big waste of time and money'

What are you talking about? Is this meant to be in relation to a games PC? You do know a games PC needs none of that, yes?

'needs upgrading every six months, needs TLC (disk defragmenting, virus scans, downloading and installing updates etc etc).'

My gaming PC hasn't been upgraded in almost two years and still runs everything at top settings at 1080p. It's never been defragmented. I've never needed to download or install any update not provided automatically. In fact, it's much easier to update than my PS3 or PSP, and has needed less work to do so. Are you living in 2000?

'Count me out.'

Gladly. And something we can agree on, finally.

'PC's are great for strategy and MMORPG but for everything else I'd rather a dedicated gaming platform.'

Each to their own. I'd rather have better options than that. Your 'dedicated gaming platform' performs badly and is hugely limited in comparsion to what I use. I know what I'd rather have, and it's not what you've chosen.

'I have tons of console exclusives that I'd much rather play over PC exclusives and even if they did come out on PC, it would take a monster Alienware esque PC to run it.'

Again, each to their own in terms of the games available (but, for the record, I think the PC's exclusives are much better than you seem to be giving credit); however, your point about 'monster Alienware esque [sic] PC's is simply wrong. Gaming PCs are not that expensive if you buy cleverly. Indeed, they're pretty cheap.

Screw that! My gaming PC doesn't handle email (although it could if I bothered setting it up, obviously). I do my email on one of my laptops.

A game on multiple platforms is a multiplat (or a console exclusive depending on how much you actually care), not an exclusive.

Final Fantasy 14 is a multiplat or a console exclusive.
Gears of War is a multiplat or a console exclusive.
Left 4 Dead 2 is a multiplat or a console exclusive.

If you don't like the truth... Then i lol in your general direction.

And the markets are different. Odds are, if someone is a heavy console gamer, they won't own a powerful enough PC to play the games that are also on ther PC.  So, for all practical purposes, the game is exclusive to one console.  It all depends on the market, and it shouldn't be a big deal either way.

The fact that PC and consoles are on different markets (which is not entirely true, not in this era) is irrelevant... If the platform is getting the same game as the other platform is not an exclusive... FFXIV (PS3/PC), DC Universe Online (PS3/PC), Left4Dead (360/PC), Mass Effect (360/PC) and World of Goo (Wii/PC) are not exclusives...

I have said it in other threads, if people want to count games that are on the 360 that are not on the PS3 (or viceversa) that's fine, Mass Effect is not on the PS3, Final Fantasy XIV is not on the 360 (both have rumours but nothing official)... But to call Mass Effect/FFXIV a 360/PS3 exclusive when i can (and will) play them on my PC legally, is wrong... It doesn't matter if one sells better than another, or if people that play on PC don't play on consoles, once again that's irrelevant...

Dude listen, I only want one laptop/pc ok? I don't want one for work and one for gaming? My printer/scanner will be connected to my one and only laptop regardless of whether it can play games at a decent graphical setting or not.

And bollocks your gaming PC from 2007 running Crysis at max setting at 1080p without a hitch UNLESS you forked out loads initially and built it yourself.

So you have a cheap gaming laptop and a gaming PC? Lol.

Regardless of your personal preferences, most of the post I initially quoted was simply wrong. Sure, I accept PC gaming isn't for you, but that doesn't make your 'facts' about PC gaming true. They aren't. If you wanted to list an array of negatives regarding PC gaming, at the very least you could have listed points not so obviously wrong. Or, on the opposite side, if you'd been feeling less negative, you could have posted some of the many positives console gaming has over PC gaming.

And, yes, I built my gaming PC myself. Or, more accurately, I pointed at a list of stuff I wanted at a local store and got them to build it for me. That said, I could have built it if I hadn't felt so lazy (they offered to build it for free, so who was I to argue?). And the cost of my individual PC, cheap or not, makes no difference to any of my arguments (or, indeed, yours).

Lastly. my 'gaming laptop' would probably be better described as a work laptop that also games. I'm a digital artist by profession, and work on my laptop a great deal. When I bought it, I made sure it could also play most games smoothly enough (which it does). Unlike you, I have many PCs: three desktops and three laptops, all wirelessly connected to each other (and the PS3). One desktop is for work, one is for gaming, and the third is for my daughter. All the laptops are for work (one for my wife who's in banking, and two for me: one for art, and the second -- the one I'm typing on just now -- which is used for writing).

It all comes down to one thing, "My console has the advantage over yours because that game is on another platform so it does not benefit your console."

Ps3 fans have to discredit games such as L4D2, Mass Effect 2 etc. because they do not want to make it seem like those games are a strong-point for the 360, which they actually are. I agree that you definately can't call a game on PC and 360 an "exclusive", but you can however call it a "console exclusive" because of the fact that it is on ONE console and a Personal Computer. The fact remains that a person going out to buy either a Ps3 OR a 360 is not going to end up walking out with a PC.

A simple sulotion to this problem is to simply say "Microsoft Exclusive" because you can only play them on MS platforms (Windows PC/360) and if you can run Mass Effect 2 on Linux or a Mac then you deserve some type of reward for a technological breakthrough. I also find it funny how every single Ps3 owner also owns a super high-end rigged out gaming PC as well... Better yet just say "360 games not on PS3". Problem solved.

As to why I would buy these games for 360 instead of PC. I ENJOY playing on my 360 more than I do an my PC. I am not going to claim I have this monster PC but I can jam the latest games no problem. 360 is just more enjoyable for me personally. As for PC having better graphics, true, however not everyone can max out settings on their PC and still have the rock solid framerate.

In the end it is not exclusive, but it does benefit the 360 more than the PC and certianly more than the Ps3. Just look at how PC/360 games sell on 360 as opposed to how they sell on PC, that says it all right there. In reality, according to hard numbers, if you choose to play these games on PC instead of 360 you are in the minority. However I still support PC gaming to the end.

I am not going to argue with you. It will simply be a waste of my time, and yours.

I thought i was the only one around here with a lot of PCs, i have 3 desktops, all of them made by myself (one for my father, my private PC and my gaming rig) and 2 laptops (one is an old notebook that i use only for performance testing on budget custom software that i develop, and the other is my main laptop that can be used for gaming because of the hardware, but it's really for heavy work), in my HDTV i use the Composite for older consoles, Component for Wii, HDMI 2 for PS3 and HDMI 3 for the gaming rig.

I'd agree with that apart from the PC = Microsoft platform.  This is a common error.  MS revenue and gaming presence on PC is slim.  The market leader for PC version of Live and Marketplace is Steam, which is operated by Valve, and other services such as Direct2Drive are also larger than MS offering.  Some of the largest PC games are MMOs, like WoW, which is nothing to do with MS.

MS provide the OS for the majority of PCs, an open operating system mainly used to drive non-gaming applications, that does not define the platform by a long chalk.

Console exclusive is just fine IMHO and defines the true nature of the title, no need to provide more fuel for the arguement fire by implying a stronger MS presence in PC gaming than it is - mainly because most PC gamers would likely bristle at the very idea, including me!

L4D2 is a great example I think.  If you only play games on a console then it benefits only MS with the 360 - hence console exclusive, it can help drive sales of that particular console by denying access to the game on any other console.  Of course, because it is available on PC, and a fair number of people like me will buy it on PC, it isn't quite as good as a true (or full) exclusive, because there is another platform and I and many others don't need to switch from PC to 360 to get the title.

So, it's really easy to simply see the following as the way to understand exclusive or partially content:

1 - full exclusive

2 - console exclusive

3 - exclusive DLC or timed exclusive

4 - multiplatform title

At least, that's how I view it and it seems fair to me.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
