I like how people just shot down the possibility without thinking that much....as Justinian just said, unless you can see what'll into the future, its possible enough. How the market will be at the end of 2010? It will be at $199? What games will be selling then? By some amazing PR campaign or whatever, it will be selling like hot cakes? We can see, by some trends, that PS3 just spanked the nay sayers this year, cannot be sure if it'll happen again, but if it does, the crows are gonna end in extintion....
ppl also said that ps3 reaching 30m mark this year was impossible, they also laughed(me included) at the guy who said MW2 on ps3 will sell 3m FW saying its totally wishful thinking.
I doubt it will ever reach this numbers again, it needs monster sales in Japan and i doubt any game can push this console back to the FF XIII levels, with all the hype and advertising (versus wont do it, and i doubt that GT could) Plus Sony is still profiting from the price cut and the redesign.
It was an amazing week for the PS3 , but i doubt we will se a similar one. God of War wont have much impact; Killzone or Infamous did little to improve PS3 sales this year.
man im going to have to save this thread for the laughs later and might even bump it
i can understand people saying it wont do it next week and even next year b/c it likely ps3 will remain at 300$ but to say it will never to it again is being unrealistic here now man this is playstation we're talking bout now

Well I am unsure about how next weeks sales will turn out... but my belief is that they will be down slightly in the West anyway, and for PS3 they will certainly be down in Japan, so not next week (I could be wrong and sales may increase in the West enough to counter Japan's fall, but I doubt it)
As such, the next time it could manage this will be next Christmas, there are zero game releases that can push console sales that high in the middle of the year, I wish people would stop kidding themselves about such things. If the Wii can "only" manage 734k with Mario Kart Wii AND Wii Fit releasing when it has suddenly been given masses of supply after a drought of consoles what makes people think any console can top that by an extra 1/3rd with just Gran Turismo, or even more laughable, God of War.
Games may help push hardware up an extra bit during the holidays, but it is difficult to tell what impact they have (except in special cases like FFXIII in Japan) Which is why the next time the PS3 could manage 1 million in a week worldwide will be:
1: Black Friday week 2010 IF a big game releases in Japan (and preferebly Europe and America too)
2: The same week as this last one in 2010 (ie 52 weeks from the 1 million week it just had) IF it has seen an increase in popularity it could manage this without a big game, if it is seeing similar sales to this Christmas then it will need a big Japan game to get that extra boost, and considering nothing bigger than FFXIII is coming to PS3 it would want a big Western game to launch the same week too.
3: The week after No2 in 2010... Which as the days of the weeks change each year means Christmas day should be a Saturday (I think) which gives that week an extra shopping day compared to this year, and thus it may not be a drop off in sales from the previous week.
4, 5 and 6: Same as 1-3 but for 2011
etcetera.
Personally I doubt number 1 greatly, but it is at least a possibility.... for this kind of prediction you should be ignoring any game releases unless they occur on the week of Black Friday, or the 2-3 weeks prior to Christmas.... because that is the only time when sales will be high enough that a push from a game might help it over 1 million.
I think I might save this thread as well....sumthings telling me it will be fun to bump this in the future.
While I doubt 1 million is possible I wouldn't be surprised to see it 750k+ if GT5 launches in Japan in the same week as FF13 in the west. Particularly if there are GT5 bundles and FF13 bundles. Too bad FF13 bundles probably aren't happening. Now as far as potential million selling weeks are concerned. Christmas week 2010 is a distinct possibility and maybe black friday if they do a $50 price cut right before it. I don't think GT5 alone will be enough to push a million if it's outside of the holidays. Especially since I find it unlikely that there would even be a million PS3s on store shelves at any given time outside of the holidays.

Gran Turismo is a definite possibility, as may a Black Friday. Did Uncharted 2 cause the PS3 to sell a million titles in a given week? I believe that God of War is closer to Uncharted than Final Fantasy is. And, I don't hold out Final Fantasy being a million console selling title outside of Japan. Worldwide, JRPGs aren't what have the largest buzz. |
