Forums - Gaming Discussion - Wired FFXII review, not so good.

Well FFXII had a few bad reviews in the west....A 7.9 from gametrailers as an example.

ROFL I love the Final Fantasy defense force coming out en masse! This guy is obviously stating HIS observations. This is based on HIS opinion of 17 hours worth of gameplay. So the defense force can seriously chill with the flaming because it's definitely getting worse than the console fanboys. I for one disliked FFXII along with almost every friend/acquaintance I've known. I still beat the game twice and sold it to another friend for about 15$ at the time lol. All that because I have been an FF fan but I will also reserve the right to criticize certain things.
The reviewer clearly states his opinion and leaves it open as to whether people may like it or may not, so what seems to be the problem here? He is not imposing his will like some of you people in the FF defense force seem to be doing. I LOVED the fighting system in Valkyrie Profile 1 and 2 and believe it's the best fighting system EVER for an RPG, but does that mean you have to agree with it? No. Same case here. So seriously go back to playing NSMBW, or another Halo, or MW2 because obviously you have no sense of differentiation when it comes the whole freedom of expression vs the attempt of imposing an opinion.
Damn, I don't mean to sound like a dick but some of you seriously surprise me. I mean ok, I don't like MW2, I prefer KZ2, but if YOU like MW2 then hey, I hope you enjoy it. If you so strongly want to be $quenix's knight in shining armor, then how bout you make another thread stating how you think FFXIII is an amazing game and state reasons why. This guy (or girl) is stating that in HIS OPINION, there is some disappointment in several aspects of the game, and goes on to explain why. Meanwhile several of us go on to explain our concern and skepticism (which we are all ENTITLED to). It's not like he spent 30 min playing the game and said "FFXIII sucks because there were 15 min worth of CG."
Listen I don't mean to sound like a freakin troll and for that I do apologize but some of you who have so many posts should really reconsider perhaps the stupidity that CAN come out when you let blind loyalty take over. And btw, in order for him to have an "ignorant opinion",.....hmmmm did YOU do a speed run? Can you enlighten us as to why FFXIII is so amazing in your eyes? And I would like to know how did he display an "ignorant opinion"? He went fairly in depth without spoiling the storyline. It seems to me he had an "ignorant opinion" because he didn't sit there and praise a franchise that YOU love. Furthermore, famitsu itself did state the huge sense of linearity felt in this specific final fantasy for a majority of the game.

Onikenshi alinea's would be nice. For the rest good post.

1) Its bad that it is that linear, 20 hours into a game. If that trend continues, you wonder what kind of scores and sales XIII will garner.
2) The review is only 20hrs into the game. I simply cannot believe someone would review a JRPG prior to finishing the game. You just cannot do that in an RPG.

Bad like in FFX?  Aren't JRPG's mostly linear untill you are almost at the end of the game and can explore the world (the best part in any JRPG for me btw).

2)  I think most reviewers do that.  What is finishing anyway. Was finishing FFX storyline enough to give a good review of the game or must have done all the side quests aswell (that can take 150+ hours).

Not necessarily. In FFVII you can do a good portion of exploring and sidequests when you get the buggy after corel prison. Then even more sidequests and exploring happens with the tiny bronco, and this is all in disc 1. Similar case in FFVIII after you get out of Timber you can explore a good portion of that continent. In Valkyrie Profile 1, despite the limitations due to chapters, there are many towns, dungeons and characters to check out (especially in hardmode). Valkyrie Profile 2 also stops being so linear after you leave Dipan the second time. Another great set of examples would be Demon's Souls, Dark Cloud 2, Legend of Mana, etc.

Also, to the previous guy on the quote, 20 hours is good enough to get an idea of game mechanics and storyline. In the Final Fantasy set of games it is normal that the first hour is mainly story, CG's tutorial fighting (FFVII infiltration Mako reactor, etc, FFVIII qualification for SeeD exam, etc, etc). For an RPG even at around 10 hours you have a good idea of what's going on. I believe by the 10th hour in FFVII I musta been at the ship fighting a version of Jenova on the way to Costa Del Sol, or at least doing the military sendoff of president Rufus. In VP I was probably in Chapter 3 meeting Lucian, etc. Point is, 17 hours obviously can't be taken as a full review of an RPG, but it DEFINITELY gives you a good idea of what is going on and game mechanics. Obviously there is always the chance of some plot twists and whatnot but it has remained the same formula that nothing is what it seems, and there is another power greater than all that is the true one pulling the strings etc. Yu-yevon in FFX, Ultimecia in FFVIII (Sephiroth happened too early in FFVII so I can't count it as a real plot twist in that formula), Loki betraying Odin and Lezard Valeth trying to obtain godhood in VP1, etc.

On a final note, just like everyone has the right to be in the Final Fantasy defense force, he also has the right to state his opinions/observations on FFXIII without having others trample that right.

i dont think im going to buy this anymore, i have never played FF and this was going to be my first and i have been excited for it for years! but all these reviews are saying...not so much
