Maybe it has to do with that weird conspiracy theory about making all of North America into one big country and they're afraid NAFTA is helping it happen.

Although honestly I don't even see what the problem would be -- we get Canada and maybe we can whip Mexico into shape. If nothing else the illegal immigration problem would be solved.

I'm not sure if i'd consider it a conspiracy theory though.  I think there was actual paper proof that it was a goal of Bush of all people.  Bush really was a lot more "rogue" then people give him credit for.  Also, really... smart in this regard.  Hispanics would of made a great minority addition for the republicans.  Most minorities are a lot more socially conservative but just get put off by the xenophobic wing of the republican party.  Kinda funny really.

I know i'd see it as a good thing.

Though I know Canadians generally are against such a thing because they'd be a smaller nation assimilating into a bigger one causing a loss in political power... Mexico, likely would hate the idea too even though they'd have the most to gain.  I get the feeling in general they aren't big fans of the USA... with i mean... good reason.  The USA screwed Mexico a lot in it's younger days.  It's just Mexico needs the US... and the US offers a lot for mexicans who come here illegally.

At the very least I'd like a NAU.

Another possibility though may just be that i'm from Ohio.  Might just be a local republican issue.

In general free trade benefits the richer nations.  I'm generally of the opinion that free trade should be the norm for rich nations.

While poorer nations should protect the crap out of their staple industries.  One need only look at Jamacia to see how pure economics screwed them up.  First the United Fruit company, but then their chicken industry got destroyed because Americans perfer chicken breasts so giant crates of darkmeat got sent to Jamacia and sold for pennies on the dollar.

A lot of cool stuff, not as much though... and well... the cool stuff in detroit is mostly centered around the bad parts of detroit.

While a lot of clevelands stuff is in the "better" areas.  Outside of the small independent theatres and stuff, though even that area is being cleaned up.

Actually, that is another misconception that many outsiders perpetuate. Much of the cool stuff is located in relatively safe areas. Most of the Downtown and its surrounding areas are safe. The Theatre District, which is located across from Ford Field (Lions) and Comerica Park (Tigers), and Grand Circus Park have a heavy police presence. Also, the Riverwalk and Bell Isle, which is home to the Whitcomb Conservatory (the oldest conservatory in the U.S.), are also safe. The Eastern Market District, which is the largest historic market district in the U.S., is also safe-it has delicious food. Most of the problem areas in Detroit are the outlying residential areas that are derelict and outside of heavy police presence. My brother and I, whether attending an event at Cobo or a show at the Masonic Theatre, have walked in Detroit at night numerous times and never encountered trouble or felt threatened.

Really? I guess if you're a car junkie or something I could understand, but I'm from the US and I never even think of Detroit. The only time Detroit comes to mind is if I think of American made cars or the Pistons/Lions. hahaha.

@mrstickball: yeah that second Cleveland tourism video is much better. We're not Detroit! haha

Detroit does not come to your mind even when you think of Motown or the other numerous musical artists that originated from Detroit?

Is Motown really from Detroit? When I think of Motown I think of the artists, I don't think about the city they came from. Just like when I think of "grunge" I think about Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, etc., I don't think about "Seattle".

Yes, Motown is from Detroit. One of Detroit's nicknames is Motown; Motown is a portmanteau of "Motor Town." Unlike "grunge" which is not a nickname of Seattle's, the music is actually named after the city and evokes images of Detroit's rich musical history.

Home to a higher unemployment rate than its graduation rate.

Thanks to fuckheads buying Japanese import cars instead of supporting American car companies. Detroit has always relied on the auto industry so they are really screwed up now.

Hey, if you don't like it, move to Russia.

In soviet russia, Japanese cars buy you!

I never get sick of that joke for some reason.

That video makes me sad. While Detroit does have places like that I want everyone to know its not like that everywhere.
