Forums - General - Thinking of moving to Australia!

Ok, so anyone who knows me, knows I can't stand the direction the US is taking. This last month is yet again, the US headed in the wrong direction.

I feel in my lifetime, this country will fall. We can not keep spending money like we are, and not have a massive negative impact.

So being I can see the writing on the wall, time for me to depart the US. I looked about 6 months ago at places around the world to move too, and Ireland bubbled to the top. However, I do not like the climate there.

So, after looking at all the factors that matter to me, the best solution on paper seems to be Australia. I have never been there however, so for those that live there, or those that have been there, what do you think is the best/worst thing about it?

Thanks! :)

Australia is a fairly liberal social democracy. Although the political system there is much better than in Australia (far less corrupt, far more representative) they also generally don't reflect your views.

They have welfare, socialised healthcare and many other things which you seem to have disagreements with.

Edit: Also they have Australians, key reason not to live there.

I can think of one, no, two reasons not to go there.

Australians are rubbish at cricket. That is all.

@Rath -

Australia is less corrupt than America, and businesses are freer.

To ding 'em, their internet laws are bad, as well as their firearms laws.

The place I am interested in is Costa Rica. They jumped 2.2 points in Heritage's Freedom Index in 2009.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Wow Mafoo, you must really hate America then.

I can tell you that I wouldn't live in Australia (I'm the type of person who gets skin cancer, and Australia is the kind of country that gives it), but you might have a darker skin tone than I do. I don't know. I'd recommend either the United Kingdom or Australia.

Worst case scenario, you could go to NZ....

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.

Fun thing is, of all the Western nations in the world, on a politcal spectrum the US is still on the right side of the scale relatively speaking... Well, maybe Belgium, Sweden and Switzerland are exceptions but who would want to live there?
