Christianity had many tricks (including making pagan gods saints) to convert pagan cultures with little resistance. Christmas itself isn’t really a pagan holiday, because the winter solstice was chosen to celebrate Christ’s birth for symbolic reasons. Many of the traditions of Christmas do have pagan roots because when missionaries were dealing with a pagan culture they would adopt the traditions of the pagan’s winter solstice celebrations and find symbolic justification for the traditions within Christianity.
With that said, I see nothing wrong with this personally being that Canadian Multiculturalism and the American Melting Pot philosophies have their root in the Christian missionary strategies. There are few other cultures which are actually accommodating to other cultures, and because of this approach we can have such diverse cultures living in harmony.
Personally, even though I am not religious, I don’t appreciate the commercialism of Christmas; and I tend to celebrate it as a family holiday.
