Final Fantasy VII - From what I've read about it on net, it was like a gift from heaven, the RPG of the RPGs. I was heavily disappointed.
Tales of Symphonia - Lets just say I shouldn't have listened to Soriku and Majin-Tenshinhan so much

My guess is that he's using the wrong Japanese kanji for 4. Instead of using 四, it seems like he's using a kanji from the し, namely, death. Oops... I don't think that's what the Japanese were going for on their 4 games... :P

Time to Work !
I don't fall for this anymore, for example a few of my good buds in real-life and on psn/twitter all bugged the fuck outta me to get Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2, but the last game people bugged me to buy because THEY all thought it was awesome and made of pure win was Fat Princess and Little Big Planet. there okay games but no-where NEAR the epicness i was told about.
I would name a few more but im far to lazy, but i do highly regret getting both those two mentioned games since now the guys and girls i use to play those games with dont play them anymore, now there useless.

In regards to the Conduit, you can also thank individuals on here, and other videogame forums, who are Wii fanboys, who probably believed their hyping up the game would end up making a difference in console wars, and The Conduit would single-handedly make videogamers see the light and decide to get Wiis to play FPS on, instead of the 360 or PS3. When I had written that such hype, and should be judged as a Wii title alone, it generated a bunch of protests on here that caused myself to get a PM warning that I was subject to being suspended.
I haven't been let on by hype for a game from OTHERS...but i did try to fool MYSELF into hyping a game, and then i got let down...hard. The only 2 games that come to mind right now are: Perfect Dark Zero (why, oh god why...Perfect Dark for N64 was a masterpeice...Zero totally ruined the name), and Call of Duty 3 (i hyped myself because i love CoD 1, and CoD2..so even with the early negative reviews i still got it...one of my most regretful decisions ever...especially since i played the whole game on Veteran, and didn't earn my achievement - a small bug at the time...even now i have it, and promised myself to endure the torture agian one day to earn my elusive acheivement...one day...)

I'm sure everyone has at one point or another... hype is just advertising for a game.
Movies, music, art, you name it are hyped (or at least marketers want to build hype for everything). It's an art really.
Whether or not it lives up to the hype depends on the person experiencing it... at the end of the day if you buy it, they were successful.
The problem with following hype is that there's a chance you would have liked those games if they had never been hyped in the first place, since your expectations would be different...
Also a lot of people have different opinions on what games they like to play. I remember when I first got a PS2, I bought some games with high reviews... but they were boring. I wasn't used to the style of game, and they just didn't appeal to me since I grew up PC gaming.
The only thing you can do is know yourself, and know what you like. Find reviewers that you trust, and try not to think about the game too much before you buy it. Just enjoy it.
Easiest #1 pick for me:
Resistance 2.
Remember the hype for this game? Remember the comparisons it received with Gears of War 2? Remember IGN giving the two games equivalent scores?
What a joke it turned out to be!
It's my fault entirely for buying it, I know, since I didn't like the first game, but... what the hell. I know some people enjoyed it, but, I was disappointed, to say the least.
There are others, though to a much lesser extent. The top scorers this gen (Mario Galaxy, GTAIV) weren't the perfect games they were made out to be. Okami was a disappointment to me as well, I can't get myself to continue the game (about 7 hours in). I also bought MadWorld recently, and... it doesn't look good. I've had to force myself to play it for the first hour and a half, already I'm considering just selling it off.
