They can go for a heavily modified Blu Ray specification. Theres no reason why the next Xbox has to be able to play Blu Ray movies and it would save them the $10 per player license fee as well along with many of the patent costs for duplication. Im sure one of the major patent holders would be willing to spin off a side specification for the Xbox next as well. Personally I hope for them that they do this as it may allow them a better data density so they can release discs with just one layer which read faster at the same rotational velocity.

well... don't you think MS and the customer would like to pay $10 / console (I doubt it is that much actually) to watch BluRay movies? $10 is not that much. The next Xbox will have an insane CPU / GPU lots of ram, at least a 250GB HDD etc etc. $10 won't make the difference for MS and they would offer a lot more value for those $10.

I am not a BluRay-friend at all. Not becuase I am a stupid Xbox fanboy, but because I am a disc hater. The time of a disc should be over IMO. It is noisy, it generates heat, it can scratch etc etc. Flash is a better alternative IMO.

Sure MS will insert something to let their customers watch movies, so I voted for BluRay, but for a gamer, I would like to see them use Flash memory. You can get a 32GB USB stick for 40€. So in 3 years you might find this for

People have phones with 50GB memory on them?!  What model is that then as I want one!

Digital Download only is a long way off and Microsoft will be using physical media for a while yet.  People have to take into account that even though where they live they might have a good enough conx and a cheap enough ISP for them to use the service, globally, the infrastructure and pricing is still not there.  Also, I'd say that the most people still have the mindset that they want something physical for their money.

In answer to the question; Blu-ray, as it's the most logical choice.

I also voted for DLC, in 3/4 years 1 TB HDD will be very cheap, it will be worth to place it inside a console as it saves space, licences, distribution costs, i belive it even can save taxes !

I also believe that using a right DRM metod as iTunes, it can help to fight the piracy and in 3/4 years even me, that live in Colombia, can expect a 4000K or 8000K to download those 25GB games.

How many games do a usual person buys in a console-generation ? I dont think it is more than 30 and that´s enought for 1 TB, also it would be nice an iPod-like distribution where u can transfer all your games from one account to another no matter switching hardware

I live in Venezuela and I don't think it will be that easy here, with the exange rate and adquisitive regulations I see it really hard. Not to mention that the Internet connection here is crap.

Though, in 3 or 4 years I would be living in another country so it doesn't bother me that much.

You may be right to mention that some countries and markets may not be that good for a DLC-only Xbox, but to be honest, we are a very small portion of the whole global market (4% as i remember, and that including the whole Latinamerica region), besides that we dont buy that much games anyways, the lost for them will be insignificant and the ones that have a credit card or the money to buying the games, would have no problems buying this stuff directly or throught (whatever is written:P) merchandants on Internet.

And about the internet connections, well, it depends also on the country, but here we have even got 20.000K for domestic consumers and yes, it is expensive, but in 3/4 years it will be more payable(does that word exists ?:P).

Yeah and the loss of the market would be compensated by the saving in physical materials. By this logic, it's really probable.

HVD won't be used by anyone until like 2018, it is supposedly the "future of video formats" and has a maximum of 10 terabytes of data,Thats f*cking huge! but its still in development...

2010 Hardware Sales Predictions

Wii: 20m- Sales will drop, but not by much.

PS3: 13.5m- It sold 12m in 2009, its only common sense it will sell more this year.

Xbox 360: 11m- It sold 11m in 2008 and 2009, I think it will sell the same.

My Fanboy Speech...

Why do you have to make excuses to defend a product that you purchased, but that's the only connection you have to it, you don't make it, you don't lose or gain money on it. I don't see where all of the defensiveness comes in, there is no reason for you or anybody else to feel obligated to defend it. Now I would understand if one of you were a developer for the product and you slaved over said product only to hear somebody call it stupid or a piece of junk. But none of you developed it, none of you are mature enough to realize that. Choosing a product all comes down to preference, you chose said product because it is best for you. Simple as that!

it naturally will be Blu-Ray. Those who say they would go with a different format to avoid piracy should know that if they were at all concerned with the piracy they wouldn't have done DVD in the 360 as the original xbox had a major piracy problem. It will not be DLC because they need their retail partners to support it. Other important factors is the dynamic group of gamers there is a great deal of gamers that only buy games with the intent to trade them in after they are done and another group that only buys games second hand. The main factor for the physical format will be what will be the cheapest to mass produce and that can meet the needs. This will likely again be an optical disc format and Blu Ray will be the only format that will meet the needs. Blu Ray is to Sony this gen what the HDD was to the original Xbox. It's nice to have, but the added costs are a major handicap, but it is the future of gaming. I think the future will have some sort of online validation to combat piracy.

I'm actually going to guess DVD again. The reason for this is that I'm absolutely certain of one thing: whatever comes on most new PCs at the time of the console's release, that's what the 360's successor will use. I doubt that Blu-Ray will be standard on most new PCs by then (if it ever becomes the standard, and I have some doubts about that).

My last two laptops have had a blu-ray drive in them.

OT.  There is no way they will use standard DVD in the next xbox.

Let me guess: you got heavily customized versions of the super-high-end models. I'm well aware that Blu-Ray can be built into high-end PCs as an option nowadays. I was talking about coming standard on most PCs, which Blu-Ray currently does not.

Or, to put it another way, look around you: what PC games come on Blu-Ray? None yet, to my knowledge, which is strong evidence that the PC game makers are not confident in Blu-Ray's market penetration. Until that changes, Microsoft will not put Blu-Ray into its consoles, because that would create a significant difference between XBox and PC gaming. The whole point of the XBox platform is to win converts from the console to the PC, and Microsoft believes this cannot be done unless the experiences are as similar as possible.

PC games are installed on HDD and not played from discs anyway so they don't worry about number of discs so they like to keep old formats as long as possible. PC games could easily be released 15 DVD's and no one would complain about it because discs are only used for installing. I know that there were a lot of PC games which came on 7-8 CD's. During time of floppy disks biggest games had 20 diskettes.  I doubt console gamers would like about that...

There was also a time where some games came with 1 CDROM and like 10 floppies. You could use the CDROM or the floppies. Sometimes they even sold them side by side as the CDROM version and a Floppy version.
